Tourism Talk
Onslow County Tourism
Winter 2009
From the Desk of Theresa Carter...
We have been mailing and delivering our new visitor guides like maniacs.  We have sent to all the state Welcome Centers, a lot of the Convention & Visitor Bureaus in the area, and some of the local chambers and attractions.  Still a lot to go!

Staff is working hard on our next big event -our yearly prison visit in Raleigh.  These ladies are the folks that answer the 1-800-visitnc phone lines - so this year we will bring a little Christmas spirit to their restricted lives!  We have partnered with Swansboro, Topsail, and Cooperative Extension and will have a group of thirteen for this visit.  This is a great opportunity to show our new video and share new attractions and itineraries with these ladies - hopefully when folks call they can suggest our area!

The New Year has us hosting the Coast Host Annual Gala and Meeting in Jacksonville and then heading out of town for NC Motor Coach Annual Meeting & Market Place and NC/SC ShowFest.  Hopefully we will bring home some awards from the state for our Event and Festival Planners!  A lot of planning goes into attending these events - they are fuel for our new year.  We are constantly learning, networking, and connecting with groups that are looking for new and different - so with the Vietnam Memorial, Riverworks, and hopefully soon the Museum of the Marine - we can offer these attractions.

As busy as we are we definitely will take time to enjoy the holiday season - so join us at  the local parades, flotillas, Christmas parties, Winterfest, Polar Plunge, and all the Christmas and New Year celebrations!  The one thing that you can count on is "if locals enjoy it - so will visitors" - they want authentic experiences!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from everyone at Onslow County Tourism!

Theresa Carter, Tourism Manager

Third Annual Arties Awards: A Big Hit!
On November 6th, Onslow County's Tourism Advisory Council hosted the 3rd Annual Artie Awards honoring Onslow's best festivals and events. This event was held at the Onslow County Multipurpose Complex and welcomed over 140 people.

Mandy Cheek of Swansboro and Electric Touch of Jacksonville  provided outstanding entertainment for this event. Also, we'd  like to send out a special thanks to the 2009 nominees, judges and volunteers!

There is no reason why every event, big or small, shouldn't enter at least one item in every category for next year. You can enter your event anytime between now and October 8, 2010, so get your nominations in early!

If you were unable to attend, the ceremony will be uploaded to  the tourism website! www.onslowcountytourism.com

2010 Polar Plung: "Freezin for a Reason"
Special Olympics of Onslow County is the ONLY organization that offers year-round training and competition to individuals 8 years and older with intellectual disabilities (again with no cost to the athlete), there is no other program in Onslow County or the surrounding cities that offers this type of program to individuals with intellectual disabilities.

SOOC allows athletes to make friends, learn new skills, improves their self-esteem, but most importantly we allow these athletes to be just who they are very special and unique gifts from God.

Plans have begun for the 2010 Polar Plunge. Volunteers are needed to ensure the event is the most successful ever. Also, your generous sponsorship would allow our athletes to continue to have their lives enriched and would be greatly appreciated by the athletes.

If you should have any questions please feel free to contact Dot Hochstrasser, Coordinator.  You may contact Dot by email, sooc@sonconslow.org or visit their website, www.sonconslow.org.
