What Makes a Good PowerPoint Template?

A Good Template!eSlide works with many different companies on several different presentations each day. This means that we see more than your average number of presentation templates.

All too often we see clients having trouble because they are trying to use a template that doesn't provide enough guidance or is not built correctly. This can lead to inconsistent-looking slides, which make a presentation harder for an audience to follow - or worse, a real slide disaster when trying to combine files before a big meeting.

Templates can be true template files, which end in the .POTX extension (in office 2007 and 2010) or they can be standard PowerPoint files which you use as a base for building slides. Both approaches have their merits (which we will discuss in another post) and whichever you choose, a template can be very helpful, but only if it's set up and used properly. Continue reading»

eSlide Extreme Makeover

 before and after

eSlide Diagnosis

The client request for the "Before" slide above was to enhance their reporting structure diagram. They wanted a slide that would be easier to revise themselves.

Adding a few names to the existing slide required additional table columns and rows. Each change affected all other cells, making this slide hard to work with. The text was too small and hard to read, and it wasn't clear how the various components related to one another. The Director was in contact with each team, and all three teams were of equal importance. The slide makeover was due back within four hours.

eSlide Results

In the "After" slide above, eSlide design consultants used a "wheel and hub" layout to correctly illustrate the reporting connections. Equal page area was given to each division to show equal hierarchy. The benefit of using a radial arrangement avoids any implications of one division ranking above the others.

All text and shapes were created as individual editable objects so the client could easily add, edit, or delete items as necessary by themselves. The new layout allowed text to be larger and some redundant information was identified and removed to further improve legibility. Slightly different colors were used to demark the divisions, allowing the essential structure to be easily understood by the audience. The new slide solution was completed and returned within the four hour deadline. Final result: another happy eSlide client.
