LEAD Member Celebration

Phil B.On  October 20, 2009, LEAD graduate and community members celebrated the Seventh LEAD Member Celebration at the eco-savvy, pet-friendly Hotel Indigo, newly opened in the Gaslamp Quarter. The hotel is the first LEED Certified Hotel Property (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) in San Diego.

Nearly 150 guests gathered on the 9th Floor "green roof" Phi Terrace to spend a few hours enjoying cocktails, hors d'oeuvres and visiting with friends old and new. LEAD members also took advantage of the reflection pool, fire pits, lounge seating and panoramic views of the cityscape at sunset. After a look at the guest rooms, many stayed to enjoy the first floor Phi Bar & Bistro.

Ben Haddad, Partner of California Strategies, LLC and Chair Elect of the LEAD Board of Directors, welcomed the group and thanked the guests for their ongoing support of LEAD San Diego. He also extended thanks to the event sponsors San Diego National Bank (now a part of U. S. Bank), AT&T, UCSD Medical Center and long time sponsor Childs Mascari Warner. LEAD's president & CEO, Judy Forrester, provided an overview of LEAD's new programming and event enhancements, and then welcomed Victoria Garrison (99), Education Director for the San Diego Zoo and LEAD's Co-Chair of the recently formed Alumni Association. Garrison thanked members for their membership support and reported that there are now committees on the council who will focus their attention on community engagement, networking, continuing education, and increasing LEAD's membership base.

Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute:
A Sustainable Future Through Aquaculture

By KPhil B.aren Trimble (08) - ALUMNI COUNCIL VICE CHAIR

San Diego National Bank

On October 29, 2009, twenty eight LEAD Alumni Association members were provided with the unique opportunity to go behind the scenes at the Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute to catch a glimpse of the future of Aquaculture.

Karen Terra, Executive Director of Community Relations and Development, introduced Don Kent, President of HSWRI, who provided LEAD Alumni with a layman's summary of the recent history of sustainable aquaculture and an overview of the HSWRI program - the only program of its kind in Federal waters - which is the result of years of research in developPhil B.ing this rich food resource in an economically feasible and environmentally sensitive manner.  Developing sustainable aquaculture is becoming a critical component in balancing dwindling food resources against increased demand - wild seafood populations are experiencing serious declines in recent years due to an awareness of the health benefits of eating seafood and environmental pressures.

Don also provided the group with a tour of the "land" side of the project - sophisticated state-of- the-art tanks of juvenile California Yellowtail and Halibut in various states of growth.  The HSWRI project is in the process of coming to fruition right in San Diego's proverbial back yard - current plans are for ocean sites for mature seafood to be located in the ocean five miles directly off the coast of Mission Bay.  In working directly with the Port of San Diego, various federal agencies, as well as the local fishing industry, Hubbs' hope to be the catalyst in helping to develop sustainable food resources and possibly a new type of fishing industry in our San Diego region.

LEAD Alumni Help Fight Hunger at the
San Diego Food Bank
Phil B.On Saturday morning, October 3rd, LEAD Alumni Erica Fessia '08, (team leader), Shannon Erdell (08) and Karen Henry (08) along with Shannon's husband, Gary and LEAD supporter Beth Jarosz volunteered at the San Diego Food Bank. The event was one of over 40 projects involving over 1,000 volunteers that took place countywide over the weekend as part of Volunteer San Diego's annual Serv-a-Thon. Team LEAD helped sort 7,000 lbs of food, enough to feed 400 people or 100 families. After the project, the team went to Mimi's Cafe in Mira Mesa for lunch and socializing.

UPDATE: IMPACT CLASS - Arts & Culture
Phil B.Members of the IMPACT SAN DIEGO class of 2010 focused their attention on art and culture at their seminar on December 10th. Setting the stage was a quote from NewCulturalPolicy .org.

Art and the Public Purpose:  A New Framework (www.newculturalpolicy.org)

"America needs a bold new investment in culture, a policy recognizing that culture holds the key to a future we can believe in. This Framework calls on Congress and the Obama Administration to support art's public purpose to mend our social fabric, promote freedom of expression and a vibrant, inclusive national dialogue, and revitalize both education and commerce with the creativity that has always been the wellspring of our energy and success."

This new Framework was developed by the Cultural Policy Working Group created on May 12th, 2009, following a White House Briefing on Art, Community,Social Justice, National Recovery.

Class members spent time at the NewSchool of Architecture & Design, which works to develop technically competent, aesthetically sensitive, socially responsible professionals prepared for a changing, global society.  They visited The Pat D'Arrigo ARTS Center, which provides visual, performing, and literary art programs for kids facing life challenges. They also experienced an innovative art installation by the AjA  Project, featuring a collection of stories by refugee youth in San Diego depicting the experience of war, displacement, migration, and identity exploration using words and images overlaid on Legacy Plaza at NCT Promenade.

Phil B.They toured Balboa Park, The Old Globe Theatre & Mingei International Museum, and heard from City Councilmember Todd Gloria, who discussed the vision for the next century of Balboa Park, which lies in his District 3, along with the communities of North Park, Hillcrest, City Heights, Golden Hill, South Park, Normal Heights, Kensington, Talmadge, & University Heights.
