"So who's in charge around here?" Good question!
Actually, it's a tough question for any Unitarian Universalist to answer about one's church. We have a tendency within Unitarian Universalism - NOT intrinsic to our religion, but widespread in our church culture - to "question authority." While that can be quite appropriate, sometimes we engage this tendency so intensely, that our potentially-healthy critical view of authority figures - minister, staff, board, significant givers, long-time leaders - devolves into a shrill, knee-jerk anti-authoritarianism. This rush to reject any appearance that one person/group in a church has any authority over another, is an emotional reaction to "being told what to do" that inherently loses its supposed critical rationality. Such knee-jerk anti-authoritarianism also plays into any number of control issues that some folk in any church may have: preventing someone disliked from influencing church life, and/or keeping open space to "have a say" on church matters that may not directly influence these folk, etc. These controlling behaviors do not just illuminate a lack of trust in a congregation; they prolong and magnify the mistrust, by blocking us from acting trustworthy with one another.
This is the bad news about leadership in a UU church - and (sometimes) it really is this bad. But the good news is it is not always, nor necessarily, like this. At our best, we UUs practice a healthy balance of leadership among minister(s) and various lay leaders. We most often refer to this as "shared ministry," where ordained and lay people come together to lead the ministries of the church, and each respect the leadership offered by the other. Part of what this means is that lay leaders share much of this work among themselves, and open leadership opportunities to participation from other people in the church. During the interim ministry period, one of the congregation's tasks is to "navigate changes in lay leadership." Roles tend to shift and change during an interim period; this is usually healthy, so long as a church allows for it: experienced leaders let go of their long-held positions; newer people are encouraged to come into positions for which they have particular gifts, skills, and interests; and the roles and expectations of various leadership positions are clearly articulated & communicated.
Here at UUCG, some wonderful work toward this goal is already beginning. A new Leadership Development Team has formed, a sub-group of the Nominating Committee. This team is working to encourage a more intentional and focused development of our lay leadership. Possible activities for this group range from offering lay leadership training workshops, to exploring ways to match individuals to lay leadership opportunities based on the unique strengths and passions of each member. This marks an important move for any church, away from an anxious scramble to fill open slots with warm bodies (a trap many churches fall into), to deeper discernment of how individuals, their leadership gifts and callings, and the whole church can come together to offer not just leadership development, but spiritual development as a leader. A brief introduction to this team can be found in this newsletter. I am excited to work with this new team, and this shared ministry we enter together, that truly can serve to help us navigate changes in leadership with grace and intentionality during this interim time.

From the Board Vice President Vance Archer
| What makes a Religious Community when we don't share beliefs?
One of the unique aspects of our community as Unitarian Universalists is the fact that our organizational structure is based on Covenant and not shared beliefs that distinguishes many Judeo-Christian churches. Rev. Posa has been actively reminding us of this on Sundays by adding an Affirmation Statement to our worship experience. He has been using the words of L. Griswold Williams to do this.
"Love is the doctrine of this church, the quest of truth is its sacrament, and service is its prayer; to dwell together in peace, to seek knowledge in freedom, to serve human need, to the end that all souls shall grow into harmony with the divine. Thus do we covenant with each other and with God."
Indeed, the focus of our church leadership during the past year has been to make this statement of covenant ever more meaningful in the life of our congregation and I see many actions and activities that are building our strength in covenant. Individually, and as a congregation, we are working hard to renew and strengthen the ties of mutual care and concern. With my recent eye surgery for example, I was able to experience, first hand, gifts of care and service from several congregation members. Our Adult Religious program has been re-kindled to spur us to cooperatively seek truth as is our sacrament. Our growing youth religious education program is building ties among our youth and adult communities, and many church leaders are working hard to stabilize and solidify our financial foundation so that we can build a stronger institution in service of our mission as a Unitarian Universalist Church.
When we each made the decision to sign the UUCG Membership Book, we were choosing to transform our own lives and the life of our congregation. We are expected to lead lives reflecting personal spiritual practice, to be actively involved in the life of our congregation by seeking out at least one small group or committee to participate in. We are expected to contribute financially, according to our capability, to make the UUCG strong and to strengthen our presence in our community.
With our regional, national and international economies in tremendous stress, impending limits on our world's ability to comfortably support rising human populations, and new learning needed to build lifestyles harmonious with the interdependent web of life, a dynamic and growing UUCG and Unitarian Universalist movement is all the more important. If you are not actively involved in the various activities and committees of our church, please make a conscious choice to apply your talents in those activities that are needed to make our church strong. Join a committee or sign up in a service function; and share your ideas on how to make us a more effective and vibrant spiritual community.

I've been going to Feeney's a lot lately. Have you been there? Or to another frozen yogurt bar like it? Taste? Moonberries? Such an outstanding treat. Well today while I was there, as I poured the Reeses Pieces in my cup, I was somehow reminded of standardized testing growing up. Do you remember those tests? Where you had to say "_____ is to _____ as _____ is to _____"? Like, "red is to apple, as yellow is to_____". Well today I realized that Feeney's is to food as Unitarian Universalism is to Religion. At Feeney's you have these basic frozen yogurt flavors (vanilla, chocolate, cheesecake, strawberry, etc.) and you have all these choices of what you want to put on top (M&M's, gummy bears, chocolate rocks, sunflower seeds, etc.)
Unitarian Universalism is so much like this! We have our basic sources of tradition; Christianity, Judaism, Paganism, etc. which serve as our frozen yogurt. Then we have opportunities to add to our base all sorts of exciting toppings like worship, music, small group ministry, fellowship opportunities, education classes, or meditation groups. Oftentimes people have the mistaken belief that UU's believe anything we want when that's just not true. We don't use broccoli as our base to put caramel topping on, we use something very specific. We use tradition, tradition serves as our sweet treat. And tradition is something that we can continue to learn from and grow into as we develop in our faith lives. So next time you head into a frozen yogurt bar, I hope you'll think about your faith. And if you'd like me to join you for some faith talk and frozen yogurt, let me know! I'd love to explore this more with you!

Annual Poinsettia Sale
| The season for cheerful decorations will soon be upon us and you can be a part of it!
Each year, the Music Committee offers our congregants the opportunity to donate a poinsettia in honor or memory of a loved one.
The foliage is used to decorate the sanctuary and foyer during the month of December.
For $15 (four for $50) you can honor someone while brining color and hceer to our church for the holidays.
Please fill out the order form, available in the church foyer, and give it with your check to a member of the Music Committee - Marilyn Clayton, Sue Sherwook, Beth Baker, Joyce Allen, Steve Andrews, Carol Michaelis, and Mark Freundt.
The poinsettia is yours to take with you after the Christmas Eve service.
The funds collected from this effort will be used to subsidize future choir retreats, which can only mean better music for all! It's a win-win situation. Let's see if we can make it to 40+ poinsettias this year!

Denominational Affairs
| Denominational Affairs - by Chellie Mason
UUCG is part of the Central NC Cluster which held its quarterly meeting in Raleigh on October 1, 2011. At the meeting, it was suggested that the UU Church of the Covenant in Greensboro should be invited to join the group.
Pridefest The State Pridefest was held in Durham in September; Winston-Salem's Pride Festival was held on Saturday, October 15th. Our Southeast District will be asked to be a sponsor of the State Pridefest in Durham next year. It was suggested that the District should also sponsor other Pride events in NC.
Marriage Amendment Equality-NC is organizing efforts to oppose the amendment. One suggestion for action is to hold a rally in Raleigh prior to the May 2012 election. Details of this will be announced as soon as available. Meanwhile, UU's have been active. A conference call will soon be convened by the District on the amendment. It will include Dan Fernanski of Standing on the Side of Love. Winston-Salem's UUs are holding a workshop that will prepare persons for speaking on this issue. Raleigh's Pete Leary is preparing a handout of talking points to be used when discussing this issue with those who don't yet oppose the amendment.
Financial Breakout Meeting Report Lonnie Houck and Steve Pearsall represented UUCG at October's breakout session. A decision was made that congregations should collaborate on cooperative financial reviews based on location and size, as follows:
1.Durham (ERUUF), Raleigh (UUFR), Chapel Hill 2.Greensboro, Winston-Salem 3.Peace Fellowship, Hillsboro, All Souls 4.Sandhills, Fayetteville
A proposal will be prepared which will specify the purpose and scope of these cooperative financial reviews, with confidentiality of financial information essential. This proposal will be presented to the board of each congregation.
Next Meeting The next meeting of the cluster will be held on January 14, 2012, at Durham's ERUUF with the Sandhills church playing host. A Breakout Discussion of Technology/Communications will occur at the January meeting.

Governance Task Force
| Update on the Governance Task Force
Entering its second year of study, the UUCG Governance Task Force continues the process or research and analysis of governance structures and decision-making processes at UUCG. We continue to work with relevant groups in preparation for recommending changes to the Board and Congregation during in the this church year. We are working with Rev. Posa with input from UUCG staff and have invited Michelle Lee and Breeze Dunham from the Policies and Procedures Committee to work with us. We expect to decide what initiatives need to be taken in terms of changes to governance structures, staff responsibilities and board operations to achieve the Goal established by the Board at its August retreat: "Act on Governance Task Force recommendations and write the first and second sections of the Policy Book." At the August meeting, we agreed on the following priority strategies to be pursued by GTF in the following ways:
- Collaborate with Policies and Procedures Committee to complete relevant sections about church self-governance and management policies and practices for the Policy Book. This would include consulting with Rev. Posa and church staff as they prepare a Personnel Manual that would include current job descriptions, planning/goal-setting procedures, supervisory lines, responsibilities for key standing committees and an annual performance appraisal process to assess outcomes and recognize staff contributions to church mission.
- Continue work with the Vice President and Council of Committees, and Rev. Posa to develop an integrated church organizational chart with clearly defined roles and boundaries in terms of authority and accountability to effectively and efficiently fulfill both Governance and Ministry functions. We consider it vital to establish a clear and accepted definition of "reporting" as unclear lines of authority for staff, committees, groups and the Board have been identified as structural and communication problems at UUCG in the past. This structural work will include examination of other UU church governance structures and the role and responsibilities of the Minister (as CEO, Chief of Staff, Consultant or other role) in preparation for a future search for a Settled Minister. Interviews with past board members and representatives of other churches and UUA "Best Practices" are part of this work. Rev. Posa, Hope McLean and I attended a workshop on Nonprofit Governance led by a Wake Forest law professor which was very informative.
- Gather suggestions and make recommendations for changes to UUCG Bylaws for consideration by the Congregation in 2012. In addition to the indemnification/liability statement for Board members already proposed, we will ask the board to issue an invitation to other committees, task groups and church staff and congregants to recommend areas of the Bylaws where they think additions, changes or clarified language would improve organizational effectiveness in accomplishing UUCG's mission. Next spring we plan to hold open discussions on the proposed Bylaws changes and on the meaning and expectations of being a UUCG member, including financial support through pledging and donations, church service, and involvement in church activities that advance the church mission and build community.
- Continue to explore Leadership Training opportunities to involve a wider cross-section of church members. We are pleased that the Board has asked the Nominations Committee to sponsor a Lay Leadership program to draw into church governance a larger cross section of members, new and long-standing. We also recommend that a New Leaders Orientation Training workshop should be held each fall. We are considering as a Bylaws change that the name and scope of the Nominations Committee be changed to Leadership Development Committee to emphasize long-term focus on strengthening layleadership.
- Institutional Memory/Archiving Records update: Sharin Francis reports that good progress is being made on scanning and filing important church records. Thanks to volunteer help and Julie's hard work the project is nearing completion.
As I will be out of town for an extended period this fall, Sharin Francis will serve as GTF coordinator. Contact her if you have questions about the ongoing work of the Governance Task Force.

Last Month's Board Activities
| A motion to accept a staff recommendation on how to expand their hours as the pledge drive income increases, was approved by the board.
The board agreed to solicit congregational input for the Governance Task Force on improving the bylaws. Comments should be sent to Sharin Francis for attention by the GTF
The Board passed a motion encouraging the Worship Committee and the Interim Minister to consider changes in the Sunday morning worship service. The board believes the period of interim ministry is the time to consider changes that could improve the worship experience of the congregation as a whole.
The board approved a plan suggested by the staff, to divide the library into two offices. Beth and Mark will be in the new offices, Julie will move to Beth's current office and Julie's old office will become the new library. At the October 23rd Congregational Meeting, the members authorized the Board to dispose of the timeshares owned by the Church. |
