WELCOME LSSU STUDENTS!

We're glad you're back!If move-in day at LSSU isn't the first sign of Fall, I don't know what is! It's good to see the hustle and bustle of campus life and all the activities that the start of classes bring to the Sault. Students are moving in this week and classes start on Monday, August 30th.
Be sure to take a minute to welcome LSSU students and their families to the community. The University is such an integral part of our community, its important we let students and their families know we appreciate their commitment to our local university.
There are many things you can do to show your support, post a welcome on your outdoor sign, be sure your Laker Friday signs are up, wear Laker apparel, etc. It doesn't take much, just your creativity.
See you on campus.

WE'RE A BOSTON QUALIFER! Certification Number: MI 10054 SH. All plans are coming along according to schedule and we are
receiving registrations every day.
Scheduled
for Saturday, September 25th, this event includes four races, a certified full marathon (26.2 miles), a half marathon (13.1) miles, a 10k (6.5 miles) and a 5k (3.1 miles). A couple of important notes: 1)
all races run across the International Bridge with the exception of the
5k. Our course is primarily fast in
flat, however, runners will experience inclines on the Bridge. An elevation chart is available on our
website. 2). The 10k is slightly longer than a typical
10k. We've added two extra blocks to
the 10k in order to allow all racers to finish at the same finish line. This will give all runners the same
opportunity to finish at the point where extra support is located, including
food, medical personnel, timing folks and supporters. We believe the extra two blocks will provide a more rewarding
experience for the runners. Volunteers
Needed! Any community event relies on
volunteer help to ensure its success. The Sault Area Chamber Chase is no exception. We have many opportunities for you to become involved with all
the race day activities. Volunteer
opportunities include:
- Water Station: Volunteers at water stations are responsible for handing water
and/or Gatorade to runners as they pass by.
Volunteers will also need to keep the area clean and tear down the
station when the race is complete. The
race starts at 7:00 am and will conclude no later than 1:30 pm.
- Registration: Registration activities take place on Friday, September 24th from
4 to 9:30 pm. Registration volunteers
will hand out race bibs, t-shirts and other pertinent information. They may also be required to assist with
questions from participants about the course, local activities and the
procedure for changing races.
- Course Marshalls: Marshalls will ensure the safety of runners
along the course. Marshalls stop
traffic (possibly rerouting traffic if necessary). Volunteers must be aggressive enough to stop traffic, suggest
alternate routes, and otherwise ensure the safety of runners. Runner safety is of utmost priority!
- Spirit Stations: Spirit stations provide race participants
with a welcoming and encouraging
environment. We are looking for groups
of 4 to 5 people to be located at specific
locations along the route to provide encouragement. These stations may have balloons,
signage, music, bands, etc. Anything
that helps let the runners know their doing a
great job. Some stations will indicate
turn around points for a couple of the races.
To volunteer contact Joann at the Chamber, via phone
632-3301, email office@saultstemarie.org or fax 632-2331. Leave your name and contact information and
we'll be in touch. The deadline to
register as a volunteer is Friday, September 10. Some of the above activities will have required training
associated with them. Our priority is
to ensure that our participants enjoy the race so they will encourage their
friends to come back next year. This
is what will help this event grow to thousands of participants in the next few
years.
