350 project
This project is all about supporting our local economy and the simple things each of us can do to help.  The information below is the crux of their message:

3 - Think about which three independently owned businesses you'd miss most if they were gone.  Stop in and say hello.  Pick up a little something that will make someone smile.  Your contribution is what keeps those businesses around.

50 - If half the employed U.S. population spent $50 each month in independently owned businesses, their purchases would generate more than $42.6 billion in revenue.  Imagine the positive impact if 3/4 of the employed population did that.

68 - For every $100 spent in independently owned business, $68 returns to the local economy through taxes, payroll, and other expenditures.  If you spend that in a national chain, $43 stays here.  Spend it online and nothing comes home.

1 - The number of people it takes to start a trend...you.

Soon we'll all be doing our holiday shopping, before you begin, please take a moment to think about what you can do locally first!  To see more information about the 3/50 project, visit  the350project.net.
THANK YOU!

Superior Coast

A quick shout out to Susan Merrill of Superior Coast Winery!  You've been an awesome member of the downtown business district and we'll truly miss your enthusiasm and commitment to the community.

While we are sorry to see you leave, we wish you and Steve all the best!  We know you'll be missing Northern Michigan ;-)

Whiz bang

Tip of the week, from WhizBang training...

In your POS system, set up a customer with the name "Donation." Whenever you give away a product as a donation to a charitable cause, "sell" it to your customer called "Donation" and give them a 100% discount for their purchase.

This lets you accurately track your markdowns (any time you give something away it's a 100% markdown) and keeps your on-hand inventory count correct.  Plus, whenever you need it you can run a customer report for "Donation" and in mere seconds you can find out:

  • exactly how much you've given away to charity
  • exactly which items you've given away to charity
  • which employees are giving items away to charity

You can also set up customers called "Damages" and "Store Display" to track how much you're marking out of stock in those areas and make sure your inventory on-hand counts are correct.

It's an easy, simple method for keeping your accounting straight and one more great way to use your POS.

Click here to for a book full of 5 years worth of Whizbang tips.  You'll have a chance to subscribe to their weekly free email.  Yes, they do offer you and opportunity to purchase their services, however, they do also provide some interesting free tidbits as well.
