Is it September already?  Wow, time does fly!  The weather in this part of the country is very typical.  Tropical Storms and Hurricane warnings.  This topic of interest- Disaster Planning for Pets- was inspired from one of my most loyal and well informed customers.Chicona Thanks Shari!

How do we prepare our pets in case of a disaster?  When we say disaster, it almost sounds impossible/irrational.  A disaster won't happen to me and/or I will figure it out at the time should it happen

Folks, now is the time to plan.
Once tensions start running high with safety at the forefront of our minds, planning is out the window.  We don't want to be faced with the Grab and Go syndrome when we could prevent unnecessary struggles ahead of time.

Most folks don't even think what to do about their pets should a life threatening situation arise.  A lot of folks end up abandoning their pets in these situations to fend for themselves- thus many pets perish.

Let's plan ahead for the safety of ourselves and our pets.  They deserve a chance to survive and when they are dependent on you as guardians of their well-being, you have to do some up-front planning.
 Dog surfing
It's simple really.  It just takes a little forethought.

Here we go.  I will lay these guidelines out as a rule of thumb.  If you can improve upon them I want to hear about it!!!  Send me your improvement in an email and I will post it for others to read.  Let's all work together.

Disaster planning for Pets:

1) Identify a Hotel ahead of time that will accept pets.  Emergency Shelters WON'T ACCEPT PETS due to health reasons!!  Your local animal shelter may be able to offer guidance for locations to house your pet in an emergency so call them in advance of a disaster.

2) Create a "Pet Survival" Kit.  Take pet food, bottled water, medications, veterinary records, cat litter/pan, can opener, food dishes, first aid kit and other supplies with you in case they're not available later.
      a) Temporarily, canned food may have to be the main diet for our pets.  REASON: The water content in the canned food is necessary in case of a polluted water situation. ( Dogs on kibble need fresh water to expand the kibble so the food can get through their digestive tract properly) So, stock up on a high quality canned food that uses human quality ingredients and consider that electricity may not be available for refrigeration.

If your pet is suffering from a condition that requires a Special Diet, stock up on that food now in canned form, if possible.  Remember this is temporary.

3)  Have newspapers on hand for sanitary purposes.

4) Make sure identification tags are up to date and securely fastened to your pet's collar. If possible, attach the address and/or phone number of your evacuation site. If your pet gets lost, his tag is his ticket home. Make sure you have a current photo of your pet for identification purposes.

5) Make sure you have a secure pet carrier, leash or harness for your pet so that if he panics, he can't escape. Never leave your pets outside or tied up during a storm!

6) In the first few days after the disaster, leash your pets when they go outside. Always maintain close contact. Familiar scents and landmarks may be altered and your pet may become confused and lost. Also, snakes and other dangerous animals may be brought into areas where there is flooding. Downed power lines are also a hazard.

7) The behavior of your pets may change after an emergency. Normally quiet and friendly pets may become aggressive or defensive. Watch animals closely. Animals have instincts about severe weather changes and will often isolate themselves if they are afraid.

For my customers who are feeding a raw diet, unless I am evacuated, I have generators to keep food frozen in case of an emergency.

By taking a little time to plan ahead for your pets' survival, you could save a great deal of grief and unnecessary pain and/or loss should an emergency situation arise.
