The Healthy Poop

Did I say POOP? Yes, I did. After having cats and dogs for over 15 years, I am drawn to the countenance, size, color, and vitality of pet poop. It may not be a popular interest but I have found it is absolutely necessary to visually examine your pet's poop each day.

aren't. It is the one health indicator you can not deny. Healthy stools are firm, not hard, brown, not black and slightly moist. If your pet has a copius amount of poop, nutrients are not being absorbed in their body properly. The nutrients your pet is ingesting are passing right through the system. Therefore, your pets' vital life systems are not being nourished and thus the health of your pet is being compromised.

Diarrhea and/or blood can be an important indicator that something is really wrong and needs to be addressed. It can signal anything from a foreign body being ingested to parasites to poor diet to cancer. But the health of the pet needs to be closely monitored before any further damage is done. Dehydration from diarrhea can overwhelm a pet very quickly so please take this sign seriously.

Foreign objects can also be found in the poop such as socks, candy

wrappers, jewelry, money, etc. It would be important to know if your pet is able to get into trouble when you are away. If your pet has separation anxiety, which sometimes causes delinquent behaviors such as ingesting inedible objects, this would be a good time to find a solution before a serious incident occurs.

Have you ever noticed grass in your pet's poop? This may be a indicator of constipation or tummy upset. If constipation is a factor, and the poop will tell all, try adding a tiny amount of psyllium or oat bran to your pets diet with plenty of water. Water being a very important component especially if your pet is being fed a dry food diet. Another reason for grass eating could be intestinal gas. The pet eats the grass to try to move the uncomfortable, noisy gas out of it's intestines. A couple of reasons for gas could be diet -the pet is not able to break down it's food properly- or parasites.

All in all, it is a good idea for any pet owner to monitor your pet's poops daily.
