Is my Pet Overweight?
April 2009 |
|
I walk my dogs and take them just about everywhere I go. I guess I know I need the exercise as much as they do, and naturally I notice other dogs. What I am noticing more and more are overweight dogs. I am not even saying a touch overweight, they are 5-20 pounds overweight in most cases! 44% of dogs and 57% of cats in the US are overweight. In fact, there is now an obesity drug designed for dogs. Folks, this is getting out of hand. Obesity is defined as body weight in excess of 15-20% over the ideal weight. Gross obesity coupled with sedentary lifestyle equals a whole host of health problems for our pets. Showing affection to our pets can be accomplished in other ways and doesn't have to include excess food and treats.
Effects Obesity can have on our Pets
-
Orthopedic problems e.g. hip dysplasia and other joint disorders, ( average pet owner will pay between $1500 - $3000 for joint disorders)
-
Metabolic disorders e.g. insulin resistance and high cholesterol levels,
-
Hormonal disorders e.g. thyroid problems and diabetes, an obese cat is 3 times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes
-
Respiratory disorders e.g. tracheal collapse and sleep apnea,
-
Urogenital problems e.g. kidney stones and incontinence,
-
Cancers e.g. mammary and bladder cancer, and
-
Other health problems such as exercise intolerance, heat intolerance and heat stroke, decreased immune function, hypertension, shortness of breath, and decreased lifespan
Ideal Dog and Cat Weights
Labrador Retriever 55-80 lbs Beagle 26-31 lbs Golden Retriever 55-75 lbs Dachsund < 16 lbs
Yorkshire Terrier 8 lbs Boxer 53-75 lbs German Shepherd 70-95 lbs Shih Tzu 8-18 lbs Miniature Schnauzer 11-15 lbs Maine coon cat 11-15 lbs. Persian cat 10-11 lbs. Siamese cat 5-10 lbs. Domestic cat 8-10 lbs.
What can we Do as concerned pet parents?
Find out what the proper weight is for your pet- ask your vet or do some research. Actually WEIGH your pet to help you become visually aware of what a healthy or unhealthy weight looks like
Feed a diet that is higher in protein and consider a raw diet. Dogs and cats Do NOT need carbohydrates(grain) contrary to what commercial pet food companies foster. A higher protein diet is not only the way nature intended for your pet to eat but creates is a fuller, more satisfied healthy pet
Really pay attention to the amount of food your pet needs- most kibble package food proportion guidelines result in overfeeding which equals weight gain
Do NOT use a self feeder
Create a walking routine with your dog. Strolling is ok, but walking at a faster pace with less sniffing is better
Take time out to throw the ball with your dog or play with interesting toys with your cat- feather toys, flashlight, paper bags
Shower your pet with affection and limit treats and excess food - give pets vegetables as treats like carrots, broccoli, asparagus instead of grain based treats
While we are well aware that fast food is bad for our kids, few of us realize that fast food is also bad for our pets. Take the time to read the label on the bag or tin of the commercial, manufactured pet food and you will discover that it is packed with processed this and processed that and a whole variety of weird and wonderful additives.
Not all foods are the same; surprisingly many of the more expensive and well known labels are not ideal. I am sure any child would eat heartedly if fed McDonald's every night, but I certainly would not do this because it is not good for them. There are many good quality pet foods available on the market including raw diets that do contain good healthy ingredients. Shop for your pet with the same concern you would when you shop for the human members of your family.
If you are concerned that your pet is overweight, please start today to make them healthy again before illness starts to show itself. It may be just a matter of changing a small habit in your daily routine to gain the results you want. Your pet's health is worth it!

IN MEMORIUM
Shabba(kitty) passed away on March 27th, 2009 due to complications of intestinal cancer. Shabba came into my life 4 years ago with diabetes and at 6 months old he had an intestinal operation. We feel his life was prolonged for several years because of the raw diet and good insulin management. Shabba was 19 years old. We will miss him and his sweet nature in our lives.
