Raw Bones- Good Health, Good Teeth

We know we love our pets when we find ourselves taking them for a teeth cleaning at the Vet's office but grimacing when it comes time to pay the bill.
I have to ask, did our dogs' ancestors need their teeth cleaned by a professional on a semi-regular basis? No. Why? Because they chewed raw bones from their prey regularly.
 When my dogs go for a checkup at the Vet's office, the professionals there always comment on the cleanliness of their teeth. No, I don't brush them. I give them raw bones( yes, raw bones- not cooked, steamed, smoked, boiled) at least once a week for an hour or so to chew, chew, chew. Not only do the raw bones clean all the tartar off their teeth, but they provide some of the highly valued and necessary calcium in their diet.
To start your dogs on regular bone chewing:
- Start slow- 15 minute intervals until they become accustomed to their new chewing regime
- Put them in an area where they can get a little messy, put a towel or blanket down for them to chew on
- Monitor your dog(s)- make sure they don't break off and swallow large pieces of bone. Smaller pieces typically dissolve in their stomach acids
- If you have more than one dog, separate them accordingly while they chew. The raw bone chewing occasionally can bring out some instinctive protectiveness regarding their food
- Once your dog has chewed for their alloted time, wrap the bone in plastic ziploc or other container and save in the freezer for the next time
- Once your dog has chewed the tissue( ligaments and tendons) off the bone and made a good dent into the marrow, throw the bone away and start them with another one.
- It is not unusual for a dog's stool to be hard and white after chewing bones

Once your dog starts a regular bone chewing routine, you will notice a difference in their teeth immediately and it also provides a great activity for them to release some of their energy. They will definitely LOVE YOU FOR IT!
