The Importance of Enzymes in Pet Food
January 2009
Enzymes are the life forces that activate, then participate in all the body's digestive and metabolic processes.  Enzymes are involved in every process of the body and without them life could not exist.  In addition to aiding digestion and proper absorption of food nutrients, enzymes perform the buildup and breakdown of tissues.  The more enzymes that can be stored in your pet's body, the healthier the animal will be.

A raw meat diet contains live enzymes that will help digest up to 75% of the ingested food without depleting any enzyme reserves from the body.  Every time your pet eats cooked foods, its digestive system is forced to produce ALL of the enzymes needed for digestion.  By eating an enzyme deficient diet, a pet's enzyme reserve is exhausted in several years thus causing premature aging, illness, disease and eventually death.

The major difference between live or raw food and dead food (like kibble) is enzymatic activity.  Enzymes that have been canned, pasteurized, baked, roasted, stewed or fried are completely destroyed at 129 degrees.

Shamus and BozworthOur pets have a great advantage over us.  Their digestive systems can easily handle raw, uncooked food and even high bacterial levels in food.

Many more of the pets that eat cooked foods suffer from intestinal problems than pets fed a raw unprocessed diet.  WHY?  It is because of the length of time the cooked food spends in the intestine and the toxins that are produced accordingly.  Digestion in a kibble fed dog takes between 12 and 15 hours for its meal to complete the journey from mouth to tail.  In comparison, a meal consisting of raw food will only be in a dog's system approximately 5 to 8 hours.  This is an important comparison because the time difference allows much more fermentation, putrefaction, and toxin buildup in the kibble fed dog than the raw fed one.

There are 2 ways you can help preserve and replenish your pet's enzyme level.  One is by feeding it a raw meat diet which naturally contains enzymes for digestion and the other is by providing enzyme supplements.  Although enzymes from a raw meat diet are more effective for our pets, a supplemental source of enzymes will still provide some benefits.  Taking enzyme supplements and/or eating a raw meat diet will take stress off organs that produce the digestive enzymes and the entire body thus leading to a healthier pet.

Carols Pet Café offers both the Raw Diet and E-Barf Plus enzyme supplement.
