A solution for staffing when the economy is uncertain
Are we still in a recession? Has the recovery begun? How strong will it be? How should my company be positioned?
There are lots of conflicting economic signals out there these days, which makes it tough for managers at all levels to know what to do about expenses. Should they be held to the bare minimum or is now the time to prepare for a ramp-up by investing in a full-timer while there are lots of good candidates to pick from?
That dilemma is particularly tough in the area of safety. Accidents don't know they aren't supposed to happen during a recession, so cutting the safety budget to the bone can easily backfire. What's more, staffing cutbacks may actually make accidents more likely by requiring fatigued workers to fill in on jobs they don't normally do or aren't trained for.
On the other hand, it may not make financial sense to hire a full-time safety professional when it is very difficult to forecast production levels.
The answer? A temporary safety staffer. Temporary staffing can help you more efficiently respond to changing production levels and can also provide a way to complete one-time projects that don't need ongoing staff.
Here are some tips on hiring a good temporary safety staffer:
- Make sure they are experienced in the role you need filled.
- Make sure they have the necessary certifications (for example, OSHA 500 certification permits the holder to teach some basic classes).
- Make sure they can professionally and diplomatically communicate both up and down - to company executives and to the workforce.
- Make sure they can devise reasonable and realistic solutions to your safety issues.
- Find a staffing supplier who will provide strong support for your temporary staffer. If he or she runs into an unusual problem, they'll have a ready resource for answers.

Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis has announced that OSHA will pursue a dedicated, comprehensive rule-making on combustible dust. FDRsafety President Jim Stanley writes in his blog that developing a dedicated rule for combustible dust should be a top priority for the agency.
Jim's blog, which has been getting an excellent response in the industry, also has recently covered the issue of fall protection in the residential construction industry and provided a highly informative article on how to get ready for an OSHA inspection. Read the blog on the FDRsafety web site.
