NHF Joins THSNA Partnership Team

We are happy to welcome The National Hemophilia Foundation (NHF) as collaborative partner in the Thrombosis and Hemostasis Summit of North America (THSNA). The NHF is dedicated to finding better treatments and cures for bleeding and clotting disorders and to preventing the complications of these disorders through education, advocacy and research. Established in 1948, the National Hemophilia Foundation has chapters throughout the country and is the largest national organziation serving the bleeding disorders community.

THSNA has been comprised of 8 partners: American Thrombosis & Hemostatis Network, Anticoagulation Forum, Hemostatsis & Thrombosis Research Association of Hemophilia Clinic Directors of Canada, Foundation For Women & Girls with Blood Disorders, the National Blood Clot Alliance and the Thrombosis Interest Group of Canada. NHF will be the 9th collaborative partner to join THSNA.

THSNA Receives Endorsements from ISTH, CDC, AHA, VDC

We are pleased to announce the important endorsements and support from the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis, the Centers for Disease Control, the American Heart Association's Council on Peripheral Vascular Disease and the Venous Disease Coalition Steering Committee.

THSNA strives to reflect and further the efforts of a broad range of hemostasis and thrombosis non-profit organizations working to improve the educational forums that will drive quality patient care in both fields. The single, collaborative conference brings together multiple leading organizations, and we are happy to welcome new partners and supporters.

THSNA Opportunities for Trainees, Fellows, and Residents

One of THSNA's goals is to provide educational and networking opportunities for the next generation of clinicians. As a result, we are offering several unique benefits specifically for trainees, fellows, and residents:

There is a new discounted registration rate of $200 for young professionals. We encourage trainees, fellows, and residents to register now and take advantage of this discounted rate.

In addition, the conference will include an interactive session targeted toward fellows and young faculty. The session - titled: Starting a Career in Hemostasis and Thrombosis - will be led by Drs. Nigel Key, Mark Crowther, and Donna DiMichele and will explore training, career development, and grant opportunities; suggestions for beginning an academic career in both fields; and options for pursuing clinical and basic science research opportunities.

THSNA is also pleased to offer travel awards for Young Investigators. We will be holding an abstract/poster session as a forum for the presentation of original research related to bleeding and clotting disorders. In order to promote clinical research by young investigators, we are offering Young Investigator travel award opportunities for selected abstracts. Trainees and fellows in related programs are eligible for this award. Submission guidelines and the electronic submission system can be accessed here.

Clot Connect Update

New patient education videos:

Clot Connect has developed a new series of educational videos for patients with venous thromboembolism, found online at: http://www.clotconnect.org/patients/webinars.  Topics include the basics of blood clotting, differences between arterial and vein clots, VTE symptoms, diagnosis, treatment/anticoagulation issues and managing complications of VTE.  Please consider sharing these videos with your patients newly diagnosed with VTE.

The videos were derived from a recent Clot Connect patient education webinar, "DVT and PE:  What Patients Need to Know".  The webinar illustrated that patients have many diverse questions following a VTE diagnosis, many of which focus on anticoagulation management and options.  Thirty-six questions were received for the one-hour event, far too many to address in the time allotted.  These will help us better develop and target future education materials.

Health care professional education:

Clot Connect offers an educational blog for health care professionals, http://professionalsblog.clotconnect.org.  During the past year, topics most accessed on the professional blog were on the topics of:

New anticoagulants

34%

Treatment and clinical care issues

16%

Vascular anatomy

8%

In response to interest in the new oral anticoagulants, Clot Connect has posted several discussions on clinical care management issues which may be of interest, accessible under the "Anticoagulant" heading at:  http://www.clotconnect.org/healthcare-professionals/resources-for-health-care-professionals

 About Clot Connect

Clot Connect, www.clotconnect.org, is an educational outreach program of the University of North Carolina, funded in part by CDC grant (1 U01 DD000292-01). It provides educational resources related to thrombosis, thrombophilia and anticoagulation to both patients and health care professionals.

The Society for Vascular Medicine

Novel Anticoagulant online CME course

Novel anticoagulants are opening up choices for the treatment of vascular disease.

The Society for Vascular Medicine has created a 4.5 CME credit online Novel Anticoagulant course presented by the leaders of the major clinical trials and nationally known experts in thrombosis. They present brand new information on these new products and communicate the pharmacology plus how these drugs should be used in venous thromboembolism and atrial fibrillation; the impact on hospital P&T; and how the new agents will affect anticoagulation clinics.

Topics can be purchased individually or you can buy the full program. SVM members pay $175 for the full course; nonmembers pay $195. Visit the SVM Web site at www.vascularmed.org/novelanticoagulants for more information.
