3,2,1 BLAST Off!
| |
Nebraska's Department of Education received a 4-year, $750,000 grant from NASA to support Nebraska Blast! - an initiative to increase the number of future scientists, mathematicians and engineers by providing students with exciting, inspiring hands on science experiences.
Launching this summer, Nebraska Blast! will provide professional development for 4th-8th grade teachers around robotics, rocketry, aviation, and near and outer space. This opportunity is limited to schools that have 21st Century Community Learning Center programs serving youth before, after and through summer school activities, so teachers can share this training with out-of-school-time program staff.
Collaborating partners include the University of Nebraska's NASA Space Grant Consortium and the University of Nebraska Lincoln Extension. For more information contact Kim Larson at 402-472-4824.
Keep watching for emerging opportunities within this growing intersection between Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) and out-of-school-time (OST). Let us know how you are using STEM to enhance your OST learning experience.

Middle School Learning Center Initiative Spotlight | Leading the community in a partnership that builds and sustains high quality afterschool programs
Middle School Learning Center Initiative helps coordinate community-based organizations to provide diverse out-of-school-time activities that meet a variety of youth development needs within 6 Omaha middle schools. Organizations leading efforts at these targeted schools are Urban League, Boys and Girls Club, Camp Fire, Nothing But Net Foundation, Bethesda Urban Development Corporation and the YMCA.
In addition to coordinating school-based activities, the Middle School Learning Center Initiative works with an array of state, local and philanthropic partners to provide a mix of funding sources. In partnership with the Greater Omaha After School Alliance, a project of Mayor Suttle's office, the Initiative helps facilitate regular professional development opportunities across the metro area. |
