Use of smartphones and mobile devices has grown at a rapid pace over the past couple years. Just look around your restaurant, or the next time you go to a mall, airport, or when you're just walking down the street: Everyone, it seems, is looking down at an iPhone, Android, or another mobile device.

Recently, the Pew Internet Project found that 83% of American adults own a cell phone, and 42% of those people own a Blackberry, iPhone, or similar smartphone. The study also found that 87% of smartphone users access the internet or email on their device, including two-thirds who do it daily.

That means restaurants like yours need to be able to engage with customers wherever they are. Here are 5 easy ways to take your marketing efforts more mobile.

Survey: Restaurant Operators Optimistic on 2012 Sales

Restaurant industry same-store sales remained flat in November, mainly because guest traffic tapered off from prior months, but operators remained bullish on sales outlooks for the next six months, according to the latest NRN-MillerPulse survey.

The December survey found that industrywide same-store sales rose 2.5 percent in November, in line with the 2.5-percent increase in October. However, sales did slow slightly on a two-year basis, rising 5.3 percent in November versus a 6.3-percent increase in October.

MillerPulse, an operator survey exclusive to Nation's Restaurant News, polled around 70 restaurant operators in December regarding November sales, profit trends, performance and outlooks. Respondents cover all regions of the country and represent the quick-service, casual-dining, fine-dining and fast-casual segments. Those surveyed in December represented restaurants that booked about 17 percent of industry sales.

With holiday shoppers spending more than expected over the Thanksgiving and Black Friday weekend, restaurant brands are looking to get their fair share by pushing gift card sales with bonuses for buyers and other incentives throughout the season.

An estimated 212 million shoppers spent about $45 billion in stores and online over Black Friday weekend, which was well above the spending tallied last year, according to a National Retail Federation survey. This year, shoppers spent an estimated $365.30 on average over the long weekend, up from last year's estimate of $343.30.

"As retailers look ahead to the first few weeks of December, it will be important for them to keep momentum going with savings and incentives that holiday shoppers simply can't pass up," Matthew Shay, NRF president and chief executive, said.
