Operators Keep Online Ordering Options Open

In an effort to help boost sales, foodservice chains are augmenting their private-label online-ordering systems by partnering with multibrand order-aggregating Internet portals like GrubHub.com and Snapfinger.com.

The private-label/public-portal strategy for online ordering appeals to both small and large chains, as is evident by Asqew Grill's decision to go that route.

Founded in 1999, Asqew Grill, the four-unit, fast-casual chain based in San Francisco, features a core menu of grilled foods on skewers served over proprietary sides, as well as ribs, chicken and burgers. The chain targets a value-gourmet niche by offering the likes of an ahi tuna skewer with a soy-buerre blanc reduction over a bed of citrus couscous for $8.

"With Snapfinger behind this, pushing their mobile app and GPS capabilities, consumers can now see who is delivering in their neighborhood or is in their neighborhood for take-out or dine-in," said Ari Feingold, Asqew Grill's marketing consultant. "People who have never been to Asqew Grill now are finding us."

Get Referrals - ask your passionate diners for a positive review

If you're a restaurant with a goal of filling seats, there's no better way to do that than through customer word of mouth. If you need further proof, according to a Nielsen Trust in Advertising Survey, 14% of people trust ads, but 78% trust recommendations from other consumers. Every restaurant owner wants current customers to refer their friends. They love it when customers rave about their food and service on sites like Yelp, Where.com, or UrbanSpoon. So how do you get your customers and patrons talking positively about your establishment?

To start, and this almost goes without saying, you have to offer really fantastic service by giving customers your best effort every time. Doing so helps create passionate customers who are more than willing to rave about your food and service to their friends, family, colleagues, and social media circle. If you already offer great service, then chances are good customers are already raving about you online. Search for mentions of your restaurant (or signature dish if it has a unique name) on various review sites to see what people are saying about your business. Google and Bing both index posts to major social networks, so they're great starting places that will enable you to see what people are saying, and where they're doing so.

New Customers and Your Draining Sink

Have you ever seen a water "tornado" when you drain your sink?  The vortex of that water tornado, in short, is created by the suction in your drain pulling water into it - very simple, right?

Imagine the top (big half) part of the tornado is a customer base that is full; meaning, you are consistently, and regularly, using Groupon, newspaper, radio, print, and other mediums to drive lots and lots of new customers into your business.

First, let us talk about Groupon, which I believe can be a clever way to attract new customers; however, using it often can prove disastrous for many companies.

What Lies Beneath: Sustainable Flooring Options for Restaurants

Flooring evokes images of sturdy wood, patterned parquet, and polished marble. Whether we think of our floors as a sturdy foundation, a creative design element, or both, the time and effort poured into selecting proper flooring is extensive.

With this in mind, many restaurants that seek Certification from the Green Restaurant Association (GRA) implement sustainable flooring options to help them earn points towards Certification. In order to become a Certified Green Restaurant®, a restaurant must earn a minimum of 100 points in seven environmental categories. They must earn at least 10 points in six of these categories: Waste Reduction & Recycling, Energy, Disposables, Chemical & Pollution Reduction, Water Efficiency, and Sustainable Food. The seventh category, Sustainable Furnishings & Building Materials, helps new or renovated restaurants begin greening their restaurant from the ground up. And there's no better way to build sustainably than by starting with your floors.
