Hi great dog owners:
The newsletter is back, new and improved. Lots of great info for you and your dog. Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Thanks for all of the cards and gifts, they really made my Christmas brighter. Thanks also for being flexible about where we trained during the holidays. Sometimes we have to move around depending on boarding situations. More classes in the parks-we will be having classes in the park again this spring. Monday night in Anderson will be at the Otto Armleder Park and Tuesday nights in Colerain will be at Triple Creek Park. As soon as the weather and evening light cooperate we will be there. Stay tuned.....Weather Update: If the weather is questionable, you can call 939-dogs (3647), check my Playful Pooches and Parents facebook page, my blog www.thedogteacher.blogspot.com or call the training location to see if classes are cancelled. If it is bad where you are, don't try to make it. There is always next week. Thanks for all the referrals. I appreciate the business. Keep 'em coming. Till next time,Keep up the great training, Lydia
P.S. More on the Iditarod next time, the Last Great Race on Earth!
P.S.S If you haven't been back to class in a while or if you been wanting to join back up-now is a great time. We're waiting for you! |

How to teach your dog not to come when called
A little twist on training but stick with me and I think you'll see how this can help you and your dog.
1. Always use the "come" command when your dog has done something bad.
2. Use "come' for everything and anything-"come along" "come up here" "come on" "come play", etc...
3. Always use "come" just before things your dog hates: baths, nail trims, crate time, etc...
4. Never reward your dog when he "comes" when called, or just reward the first time and never again.
5. If your dog doesn't "come" when called, keep calling "come" over and over.
6. Assume your dog knows "come" after one or two practices.
7. Use the command "come" to call him away from big distractions (deer, birds, squirrels) right away after just learning the command.
8. Use a firm even harsh voice to call your dog to "come".
Can you see where I'm going with this? If you turn these around, you can teach your dog to come each and every time you call. |
Management is the Key
Don't set your dog up for failure. When you dog isn't fully trained in certain commands, you need to manage the situation for your dog to succeed. What do I mean by that? If your dog is a jumper (on people) and you have a big event planned, keep your dog on leash and keep his crate handy as well as some good bones or stuffed Kongs. If your dog doesn't come when called (see associated article), keep a squeaky toy with you and some treats as well as some techniques to help him come when called. If your dog is a door dasher, baby gate him off whenever anyone opens the front door. Keep your dog successful and safe with thoughtful management. |
