Dog Training
The Place for You and Your Dog to Succeed! |
My Vision and Mission Statement:
To coach owners and dogs to live better together in harmony and balance. |
Dear great dog owners,
Wowee! Summer already. Where does time go? Hot weather, thunder storms and for me: car trouble. My apologies to those who came to class the other Wednesday when my car broke down. I borrowed a cell phone and after calling AAA, tried to call as many of you as I could. The Family Pet Center also helped in calling-Thanks everyone. A starter, new plugs, new plug wires and an oxygen sensor later, it should be good to go. Send good car karma my way.
Take note: no classes Saturday July 3rd, Sunday July 4th and Sunday July 5th. Have a great holiday!
Another note about the hot weather, please, please, please don't leave your dog in the hot car for even a second.Everyone probably knows this but even so. Some folks (not in my classes-thank you) left their dog in their car while they went into a restaurant to eat. Someone noticed (thank God) and called the Sheriff. He went in and gave them a ticket, a stern talking to and a not so nice invitation to court which could end up in jail time.
Another big thanks to my classes that have been patient and flexible with the training locations. The Family Pet Center gets tons of boarders over the summer so we have to train where we can. So for the summer we are training gypsies. But I will always make it fun where ever we go.
Event you don't want to miss: The Blessing of the Animals at Freedom Church in Sharonville on Tramway. It is July 10th from 10:30am to 2pm with contests, booths, and of course Blessings for your pets! This is their first year for this event so let's help them make it great.
I'm now on Facebook. Come visit Playful Pooches And Parents Dog Training and become a fan. Pictures coming soon on Facebook of me and Sage at the TV Studio. It was a blast!
Be careful on the 4th and the days surrounding it. Lots of dogs are afraid of the noise and lots of dogs run away during this holiday more than any other holiday. Make sure your dog is secure. We don't want to lose anyone.
Some big congrats going out to: Layla, Bodhi, Henry, Sophie! All got their AKC Star Puppy Awards. Dexter got his AKC Canine Good Citizen Award. Way to go Dexter and dad! And Bodhi, Tyson and Bear all graduated Puppy class. Great work owners and dogs.
Ace is looking for his new home. Rescued from life on a chain, abandoned by his owners, can't get into a shelter or rescue because they are all full and his breed (staffordshire terrier), please pass his story on. He's neutered, up to date on shots, maybe a year old and all white except for one brown ear. (if interested, email me, I got pics). Ace thanks you.
Keeping you informed and entertained (I hope),
Lydia
P.S. New Therapy Dogs In Training Class starts Sunday at the Animal Ark July 18th 1pm. Email to register. Dog must have his CGC to enroll. |

If you are into blogs, there are some great dog blogs out there. If you do not know what a blog is, here's an explanation. It's daily (or other intervals) writing about life, in this case-dogs, usually the owner's dogs and their life with them. Kinda like a diary but public for people to read.
Here are some of my favorites and something about them. I also have a blog (or two) check out www.thedogteacher.blogspot.com You too can blog. Go to www.blogspot.com and check it out. It can be about anything and it's free. You can also insert pictures or video. Great way to share bits and pieces of your life with the world at large.
www.wootube.net
life with 3 border collies and Woo. You'll have to read it yourself to find out who Woo is. I love her blog.
I think you have more than enough to get you started. Hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

No Time to Practice?
Yes, you can!
I hear this ALOT from dog owners. And I hear ya. I know life is busy but you and your dog NEED to practice. Everyday. You see your dog everyday don't you? Make your time with him training time. And make it fun. When you play ball, everytime he returns the ball, ask for a command. When you feed your dog , take a handful of food and practice some commands. When you are watching TV or on the computer, practice some stays with him. There are lots of training moments in a day. And training helps you and your dog to bond. So don't say we didn't have time to practice this week. You can fit in 5 minutes a day almost anytime or place. Go practice and have some fun. |
Quick Fix
There is no such thing with dog training.
Lots of ads promise a quick fix for your dog. I'm here to tell you there is no such thing. The tried and true way is training, training and more training. And lots of patience. Lots. Did I mention LOTS of patience? There are no pull harnesses, shock collars, prong collars, sprays and some of these may help but some of them can actually cause your dog harm and take your training backwards. And you also run the danger of suppressing behavior only to come back at another time. Don't just treat symptoms, you need to get to the underlying cause.
Any training help (device, collar, etc..) you use should also pair up with some training so eventually you can phase out the training help. Some people depend on the training device to do all the training. This will not work, you need to be involved. For example, a no bark spray collar should be paired with a quiet word (such as hush, quiet or enough) When you see the trigger, the object of your dog's barking approach, say your quiet word just before the bark. If your dog does not bark, reward them. If they do bark, the spray will spray them. But all training should start at the lowest distraction level then work your way up.
It's always best to try a positive training approach first, teaching your dog what you do want him to do and reward the heck out of it instead of only punishing for what you don't want him to do. And it's a lot more fun for you and your dog. |
Canine Good Citizen Award
What's it all about?
It's an award given by the American Kennel Club for well behaved dogs. We work on this in my classes and test for it in Level 4. It's a test every dog should be able to pass. Some places are actually using it as a standard for their communities, townships, apartment and condo organizations. Here are the items you and your dog need to do to pass:
1. Accepting a friendly stranger.
(person walks up to you and
greets you and ignores your dog.)
2. Sitting Politely for Petting
(dogs sits for petting)
3. Appearance and Grooming
(dog allows person to examine
ears, front paws and brush
down back)
4. Out for a Walk
(loose leash walk with left
turn, right turn, about turn,
and two stops)
5. Walking through a Crowd
(walk thru a crowd of three
people and a dog without
reacting)
6. Sit, Down, Stay at 20 ft
(dog sits, downs and stays
while you walk 20 ft away
and back and grab collar)
7. Coming when called.
(Dog comes when called at
10 ft away and you grab collar)
8. Reaction to Another Dog
(you and your dog walk up to
another owner and dog, greet
them while dogs stay at side)
9. Reaction to Distractions
(Dog must not react to one
visual and one auditory
distraction)
10. Supervised Separation
(dog must stay without owner for 3 minutes with evaluator)
*Note: all items must be passed at the same test, regular or martingale collars only are used during testing, no potty during testing and no treats. |
