Dear great pack leaders,

Hope everyone is having a wonderful Spring. I'll keep this short and sweet as the newsletter is long this month. Lots to read and learn.

On a very sad note, we lost our dobie Frankie to diabetes this past Saturday. She was a sweet and gentle soul. We rescued her and only had her about a year and a half. Rest in peace, gentle girl.

Lots of dog events coming up. Stayed tuned for more to come. Also train, train, train so you can take your well-behaved pooch to all the dog events.

News on your classmates and my fourth dog if you're not tired of the dog tales yet. Also I'm looking for a wheelchair to borrow for my Therapy Dog classes. Preferable a foldup one. Also looking to buy an older Explorer-late 90's or early 2000 to fixup and carwrap(or is that SUV wrap). Keep your eyes open for me.  Think I might have one coming. Keep your paws crossed.

Keeping you informed and entertained,

Lydia

Those lovable bassets! Gotta love 'em. Those lllooonnnggg ears and loooooonnng noses. Those short, short legs and chubby, chubby paws. My Oreo was a beagle/basset. Our picture is at the bottom of the newsletter. My souldog. Maybe that's what drew me out to Outlaw Bassets. It is a basset/equine Rescue in Harrison. I've been out there a couple times helping rescue owner Sarah train the rescue bassets so they can get and keep new forever homes. Check it out at www.outlawbassetrescue.com  Love a Basset today!

somethingWhat Some of your Classmates are up to
Snowflake is wowing them in Florida and at Rally classes. Flynn is learning to be a Therapy Dog like his big brother Tucker. Harry is also learning about being a Therapy Dog and getting ready to compete in Rally. Go Karen and Harry. Winnie is kicking it up and jumping it up in Agility class. Happy is happiest learning all about Therapy Dog,too.  If your pooch is doing something you want to share , send me an email and we'll let the pack know. We are proud of you!
Some of your classmates got new siblings: Winnie got a new sister Sophie, Kleyo got a new brother Rufus and sister Haydin. Dexter and Aida from Level 3 just found out they are brother and sister. What a family reunion! They played till the cows came home. Ruger got a new brother Max (formerly known as Everett)  And Morgan (formerly known as Whistle) got a new sister Keyland. She just loves her and little sister has brought out the playful side of Morgan.

dog sittingHave a seat!
Teaching your dog to sit can solve all kinds of behavior problems. Sit for: petting, meals, play, attention, treats and much more. Sit is usually the first command clients teach their dog and most dogs come into class already knowing sit. Use this to your advantage. It can be the canine version of "Please."  If your dog wants something, he needs to sit. If he pulls on the leash, stop, have him sit and we can begin again (without pulling). If company comes in your door, or kids on the walk want to pet him, he needs to sit. And stay seated. No pop ups. If he'd like his dinner, he needs to sit. As he barrels toward you in happy enthusiasm, stop him with a "sit!", then pet him. He can have anything if he will just "have a seat".

tyler1Tyler
Now I'm to my fourth dog Tyler. Hope you aren't tired of my dog tales yet. Tyler was a beagle that we adopted from a work friend of mine. Gypsy had been gone a couple years and we were dogless. A family said they had a beagle that was a such a bad dog and he didn't listen and tore up everything. (sound familiar?) They had banished him to the outdoors in a dog house. Only one year old so we opted to adopt. Best decision ever. Best dog ever. He was our first inside dog, well behaved, never tore up anything, loved rawhide, Kibbles and Bits, and his biscuits. Helped me and my daughter through a divorce and my father's death. Totally afraid of thunderstorms. Lost an eye from an eye infection, got hypothermia and arthritis all as an old dog.  First dog I had to take myself to have put to sleep (renal failure at 13 and 1/2 yrs young) Best dog ever. (Notice the mud on his nose. Did I mention he LOVED to bury his rawhide and dig it up later-too funny!)

fleaThose Darn Fleas and Ticks
Not that kind of Flea, the insect kind. It's that time of year again for the bothersome insects. There are so  many kinds of protection for your dog. You have anything from Frontline to Cedarcide to essential oils to garlic. You have to decide for you, your dog and your lifestyle what is best. What I do advise against is commercial flea skin drops from commercial stores (ie: Walmart, Kroger, etc...) If you are going to use a pesticide skin drop, go with the best which is Frontline. There are a few more out there that vets carry that are okay but carefully read the warnings and ask lots of questions. Some dogs don't do well with any pesticide drops so just beware. Investigate more options and do your homework for your dog's sake. Not all protections are good for every dog. Find what works well for your dog's health to keep away fleas, ticks, mites, mosquitoes and flies. I'm just not sure how to keep the Flea in the photo away. Yet.
