Happy Halloween from Playful Pooches and Parents Dog Training!
Dear great dog owners,
If you are wondering where the black shepherd is, he'll be back. I just thought it fitting to put a red dobe this time. On Oct 12 2009 I lost my red dobe Flame. She was between 10 and 12 years old. She was from the SPCA and we adopted her in 2001. She fell ill about 3 weeks ago and injured a bone in her spine. I believe she had a stroke or seizure then got her paw caught in her crate and couldn't move to get it loose. The vet put her on complete bed rest for 2 weeks and it was exactly 2 weeks Oct 11. I will really miss her big self and her big voice.
It's here again, that time of year we bring out pumpkins, costumes, and spiced cider. I love this time of year. You and your dog will too but be mindful of a few things. See the article below.
Also you can now register your two or more breed dog with the AKC. Check out the website www.akccaninepartners.org for more info.
Have a safe and happy Halloween!
Howls and hugs,
Lydia |

Our Foster Classmates |
 |
I have many shelter/foster dogs that come through my classes from several shelters and rescues. I do this for several reasons. First, they get some training that can help them get a forever home. Well behaved dogs get homes. Second, it gives them exposure. Someone sees them in class and tells someone that's looking for a great dog and they have a love match. Third, the shelter/foster dogs get a night out, a one on one time with their special person. This means a lot.
This picture at the top is a Halloween picture of Jackson-a foster dog of mine.He is still at the League for Animal Welfare. Check him out at www.lfaw.org He's been there for 3 years. He's not a bad dog, just a big dog.
Some others currently in my classes looking for a forever home include: Gibson, Moe, Eden and Bodie all from Save the Animals Foundation. Check them out at www.staf.org. They are all advancing wonderfully in class thanks to their devoted volunteers. Jasper is from Sheltered Paws. They work with the SPCA to get some of their dogs into foster care. No doubt this has saved the lives of countless dogs. Check them out at www.petfinder.com
Last but not least we have Vinnie. Cathy Madewell is an independent rescue resource who fosters Vinnie. He comes to class at Anderson Twp Family Pet Center. He has come a lot way from his puppy mill past. Way to go, Vinnie! |

Halloween is a fun time of year. Just be sure to take a few precautions to make sure your canine enjoys it as much as you do. Be sure your dog sees and gets used to costumes and masks ahead of time. Use lots of treats and make sure he sees that it is really you under the mask. Also do not give your dog candy, especially chocolate as it is toxic to dogs. (not people thank goodness, it's my personal favorite). Don't let him get any accidently. Keep all candy up and away from dogs. Also watch out for your dog around candles and campfires. We love them but they might not understand the danger. Lastly, if you dress up your dog, make sure he can move around and practice putting it on and off before the big day. Have a great Halloween with your dog!

Of Quotes and Wolves |
 |
"The wolf, now an endangered species, has become a symbol of all that is right and in harmony with nature. It is modern man who in his ignorance has been wrong and out of step with nature. Not the wolf." Michael W. Fox, The Wolf (1989 )
"If all the beasts were gone, men would die from a great loneliness of spirit, for whatever happens to the beasts also happens to the man. All things are connected.Whatever befalls the Earth befalls the sons of the Earth." Chief Seattle
"Until he extends his circle of compassion to all living things, man will not himself find peace." Albert Schweitzer

When I have to Cancel Classes
I rarely cancel classes. I just did this a couple mondays ago because my car wouldn't start. I tried to call everyone I could think of that might come to class. In that case or in the case of emergency or illness, I or an assistant will call you, hopefully giving you a few hours if not more notice.
In the case of inclement weather, I will put an announcement on my voicemail on my main number as well as my cell phone. It will be right at the beginning of the message so you won't have to listen to my whole schmeel before you get important info.
Also in regard to bad weather, if the weather is bad where you are (icy, sleet, tornado warnings, such) don't risk you or your dog's life for class. There is always next week. And as always, if you aren't at class, it doesn't count towards your classes paid for. |

Counter Surfer
Do you have a surfer in your house? Here are some helpful tips to end this troublesome behavior. First, be sure they never get anything off the counter or table. Never. This means always be vigilant and push everything way back or in cabinets. If they never win the counter lottery, they will stop playing.
Second, watch for your dog to go near the counter or table and immediately say "leave it!". Redirect them to another activity that they can do (ball, fetch, chew bone) and say "good dog". If they are already on the counter or table, make a loud noise (clap, stomp, say no or hey), tell them "leave it" and redirect.
Third, you can take pre-emptive moves and line the counter or table edge with double sided tape right where the paws land. Most dogs don't like the stickiness and will be discouraged. You can remove the tape in a few weeks. You can also set mouse traps (only the plastic kind) along the edge to make the noise for you. They sell some especially for counter surfers called dog traps.
Fourth, there is always the old bagel trick. Take a bagel, tie a string around it, tie the other end to a colander (metal would work better). Fill the colander with empty metal cans. Leave the tied bagel near the edge. Tell you dog to leave it and then leave the room. In a few seconds you should hear cans crashing and find a bewildered dog wondering what the heck happened. Repeat a few times and he should get the message. It really works. |

Proud Moments-Congrats
Brianna the sheltie and proud mom Sharon just passed Therapy dog tests. Way to go, girls!.We also had several graduations including: Bella, Maia, Kenzi and Oliver. I also found out that Phoenix Klein, a graduate of my classes, is THE therapy dog at St Joseph Orphanage. Great work Phoenix and Diane. Pam Deville and Tucker , another graduate from a few years ago, continue to bring joy to many seniors at nursing homes. She is also training another-Flynn. He may also be a therapy dog in months to come.
Speaking of Flynn, he and his classmates and buddies-Lucy and Amber graduated last week. They were a joy to have in class, passed their Canine Good Citizen and I hope to meet up with them in day care or on the leash walks.
Some of our classmates are trying very hard to pass their Canine Good Citizen. They deserve a mention for all their hard work: Micah, Ranger (go, Ranger), Cocoa, Jasmine, Moe, Teddy and if I forgot to mention anyone-you know who you are. Great trys everyone.
Two of our pups recently got their AKC STAR puppy awards: Winnie (you are too cute) and Guinness (as delightful as his name). Great work and congrats owners! | |
