Striking Out On Your Own

The economy is in recession. Millions are out of work.  Is now really a good time to go into business?  It is a challenging environment to be sure, but a recent article in The Industry Standard, a business technology publication, claims that because banks are reluctant to make loans for large business ventures during a recession now actually is a good time to consider going solo.  One person can invest as much of their time and energy into his or her project as necessary to be successful.  This may take the shape of consulting, freelancing, or perhaps providing a needed service as a one-person firm.  In this edition of our newsletter we will offer some ideas, solutions and inspiration for entrepreneurs considering striking out on their own.

FEATURED BUSINESS

Finding Your Niche, Finding Success
Umar Mycka: The Poison Ivy Horticulturalist

When Umar Mycka, a Temple grad and former horticulturalist at the Philadelphia Zoo, wanted to strike out on his own, he thought a lot about his industry, his market, and his interests.  He also invested a bit of his time at the Free Library.

Umar credits the library with "impacting my business by showing me how to define the benefits of my business to clients, through research and understanding of the NAICS code, my place in the industry, client demographics and the best opportunities to find partners and workers."
Ultimately, Umar decided to focus his efforts on poison ivy, a common outdoor pest made all the more prevalent by the increase in CO2 in the atmosphere caused by global warming.

Umar's business, The Poison Ivy Horticulturalist, is now a success.  He was featured in the New York Times.  And most recently, he became a supporter of the Free Library of Philadelphia Foundation's fundraising efforts.
