Health Unit Coordinator

Course Description:

This course is designed to prepare the health unit coordinator student to facilitate the activities of people in a health unit to work together smoothly and harmoniously in a common action, which is the delivery of health care to patients. Students will learn management of information, communication, medical terminology, critical thinking and cultural diversity. Students will learn to transcribe physician order's.
Students with skills in health unit coordinating will be prepared to work in a variety of health care settings.

Comment: We believe that health unit coordinating will be a profession that is attractive to the new wave of health care workers. A recent Health Care Advisory Board analysis of the number of inpatient beds needed to care for our aging population indicates that we will face a shortage of beds in the future. Additional beds will be need in the years to come. These additional beds will increase the number of health unit coordinators needed in the workforce.

Certification Note: Upon successful completion of the program students will be eligible to take the national certification exam administered by the National Association of Health Unit Clerks/Coordinators (NAHUC).

Elder Abuse and Neglect:

Every year, tens of thousands of elderly Americans are abused in their own homes, in relatives' homes, and even in  facilities responsible for their care. Verbal abuseYou may suspect that an elderly person you know is being harmed physically or emotionally by a neglectful or overwhelmed caregiver or being preyed upon financially. By learning the signs and symptoms of elder abuse and how to act on behalf of an elderly person who is being abused, you'll not only be helping someone else but strengthening your own defenses against elder abuse in the future.

It's difficult to take care of a senior when he or she has many different needs, and it's difficult to be elderly when age brings with it infirmities and dependence. Both the demands of caregiving and the needs of the elder can create situations in which abuse is more likely to occur.

Ideas From Our Activity Director Students:
Our Activity Director Students have some great ideas!

One of the requirements of our Activity Director class is participating in our Discussion Board.  Activity ideas abound!  Here are a few of the more popular and creative ideas:
  • Karaoke
  • Pet visits (look for local programs that have trained dogs, etc)
  • Wii (especially staff vs. residents - builds sense of community)
  • Chili cook off - let residents use kitchen facility. Have small prizes like baked goods
  • Cards, bingo, dominoes
  • Crafts - especially ones that can be used to decorate facility
  • Sing-a-longs or a "Name That Tune" game.
  • Visits from school kids
  • Celebrate resident birthdays - either individually or as a group each month
  • Devotions
  • Hangman or word games
  • Cooking
  • Movie nights w/ popcorn
  • Globe Trek - put together a presentation on one city/place per month.
  • Use internet pictures and information. Invite a guest speaker who can talk about that region.
  • Book clubs
"Some ways I would get volunteers to assist in activity programs would be to contact the local Senior Citizen club and invite seniors to the facility to play Bingo, cards, reading, kitting, etc...with people of their own age. Not only does it excite the residents, but it also makes it comfortable for a senior down the road of what to expect if he/she would ever need to be housed in a facility for any length of time."
