| 10 Ways to Help Your Residents Beat Loneliness This Season
Christmas
can be a very lonely time for nursing home residents. Yes, there are
extra visitors and activities, but for those without families, or with
families who fail to visit or write, the season is very bleak and
depressing.
As a caregiver, you can see which residents do not receive visitors and
will probably feel lonely or left out during the Christmas season. What are the 10 Ways? Read more from the WCO Blog...

I love to take a big stack of scrap paper and
go into the lobby, I sit right in the middle and make paper
airplanes. Once I have made enough for all the residents and a few
extras the residents throw them at each other and me and everyone who walks
by! They laugh and carry on and it must take them back to when they were
children because they have so much fun. We have two residents who were
teachers before they retired and they have more fun than anyone. I always tell
them it's their turn to be throwing the paper airplanes. It is a blast,
all the staff that come by while we are doing it join in and everyone has a
blast!

The residents' favorite exercise seems to be
swatting balloons with fly swatters. They love it and once they get
started they don't want to quit. They also like to play catch with the
beach ball and they like to kick it to each other. They especially like
it with they kick the ball or swat the balloon out of the circle and I have to
chase it. They tease me about getting more exercise than they do.

I think music is their favorite
activity. They love sing alongs. The other day I took my Alan
Jackson CD to work with me. It is a religious CD and they sang all of the
songs with him. They loved it. Afterwards, one resident came to me
with tears in her eyes and said "I think that was wonderful, don't
you?" This almost brought tears to my eyes. They also love it
when someone plays the piano or any instrument to entertain them. I have
the biggest turnout for activities when it involves music.
