 50/50 Raffle
New Drawing Date!

Traditionally, the 50/50 raffle is drawn on Sunday of Festival weekend in September.  With the new dates in July, we figured our fans needed a few more weeks to purchase their chance at $12,000!

The official winner of the 50/50 raffle will be announced at the Institute's annual Sunset Soiree on Saturday, August 25.

Tickets will also be sold at the front entrance tent throughout the Festival.

Wings 'n Water Festival Poster Contest

The Festival committee announced an open poster contest in March.  This project helped to engage the community and create a unique new image for the Festival.  The theme for the contest, A Celebration of Water, was interpreted in over 40 entries from local artists and students.

The first place prize was awarded to Colleen McLaughlin for her unique watercolor interpretation for the event.  The 30th Anniversary Wings 'n Water poster will be on sale at the Institute's Tidepool Shop and at the Avalon Community Hall. McLaughlin will also be present at the Wings 'n Water Festival on July 12 and 13 to sign purchased posters.

McLaughlin is a graduate student pursuing a Master of Arts in Teaching at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA.  She recently completed her undergraduate degree in Illustration, and is looking forward to a career in children's book illustration and art education.  More of McLaughlin's art is viewable at www.colleenmcldesigns.com.

Second and Third place prizes were also awarded:

2nd Place:  Nancy Yarnall von Halle of Avalon, NJ

3rd Place:  Jennifer Haldeman Loyle of Swarthmore, PA

 David Denick
1943-2012
It is with great sadness, that we announce that a long-time Festival exhibitor, artist David Denick, passed away in early June.

David was famous for his incredible talent in Gyutaku Fish Printing.  His art demonstrated a sensitivity to the environment and a man's place in it.

Through the years, David created a series of prints made directly from the actual fish in a process called Gyotaku, an ancient Japanese printing technique used by the fleet of fisherman as a way of recording their catch and capturing the essence of the live fish.

David, and his unique art, helped to make the Wings 'n Water Festival stand out as a world class art show, and will be greatly missed by all.

Plein Air Art

For 11 years the Festival has included a Plein Air Art Show featuring a variety of nationally known artists painting in

Southern New Jersey for three days preceding the Festival.  Plein air will remain an interval part of the Festival with a new and exciting feature involving Beth Erlund.

Beth, a Colorado artist, originated the concept for a plein air show for the Festival and was one of our original plein air artists.  Before that, she was a multiple year participant as a Batik artist and was the poster artist twice in the early 1990's.

Evening Light, Beth Erlund

Although Beth will be unable to attend this summer, she has agreed to submit 8 to 10 selected framed plein air paintings featuring water and marshlands painted primarily in Florida.  She has accepted a 60/60 challenge involving a number of other artists to paint 60 paintings in 60 days - a demanding plein air project.

The challenge began in March and Beth's paintings will be from this collection. The Plein Air Art Show will return to the stage at the Avalon Community Hall.  Beth's exhibit will be for sale and will be included in the show.  Also featured will be a collection of plein air art submitted by Wings 'n Water plein air "alumni" artists including Stan Sperlak, from Cape May, and Scott Yeager, now living in Colorado.

Stone Harbor Sunrise, Chuck Law

The focus of the Plein Air Art Show will remain the paintings of artists who will be painting in Southern New Jersey for the three days preceding the Festival.  We expect to see a different view of our familiar landscapes due to the change in dates for the show.  Look for more early morning light, brighter colors, sparkling ocean scenes and, perhaps, a lingering sunset.

Come, look, enjoy, meet the artists and take home a special reminder of the 30th Anniversary of the Wings 'n Water Festival. The Plein Air Exhibit will be on the stage at the Avalon Community Hall (30th Street and the beach, Avalon) throughout the Festival.
