Greetings! Balmy summer weather is lulling us into thinking maybe we should leave the classroom or computer and go outside. And indeed, participants in the September Birth Doula Skills Workshop did spill out into the courtyard, to sit at the feet of Instructors Penny Simkin and Teri Shilling. The week of 9/12 Department of Midwifery welcomed 18 Year 1 students including three brave souls from Naturopathic Medicine who are going to be the first to try out the dual track midwifery option for naturopathic students. It's been a busy month of community outreach - Annie attended the Postpartum Support International conference which took place in Seattle this year. (Check out the new DVD available (below) for use in promoting awareness of postpartum mood disorder.) Suzy and Annie were both honored to take part in the Equal Start Community Coalition - Regional Policy Summit. (Learn more by clicking on the link below.)
We hope you and your families are enjoying the season and we'd love to hear your news! Suzy Myers, Department of Midwifery Annie Kennedy, Simkin Center

Myers Midwifery Scholarship Awards $10,000 to Midwifery Students! Congratulations to this year's award recipients-Lisa DeLorme, Emi McLaughlin and Lisa Wiley! This scholarship fund, named in honor of Suzy Myers and Jo Anne Myers-Ciecko awards tuition funds to students who demonstrate scholarship, leadership and a commitment to providing midwifery care to underserved communities. Of course, we can only make awards when we have money in the fund and this is where you come in. Please make your tax deductible gift today to support the education of more midwifery students. Read their inspiring stories below, and click here and choose the Myers Midwifery Scholarship Fund. Thank you in advance for your generous support! |
Lisa Delorme
|
Lisa Delorme - "I am honored to be one of the recipients of the Myers Midwifery Scholarship Fund. This scholarship has made a significant difference in the ability of my family to be together over the next couple of years while I pursue my dream of becoming a midwife. I would like to express my gratitude to everyone who has contributed to this fund. Receiving an award created in the name of such inspirational women has increased my determination to strive for excellence and to one day become a leader in the midwifery profession. " |
Emily McLaughlin
|
Emily McLaughlin - "A scholarship is a way to recognize the contributions individuals make to the University, the Department of Midwifery and the community. I feel so blessed to receive this award and the recognition that comes with it. It motivates me to work harder toward my goal of increasing the numbers of midwives of color in order to reduce racial and ethnic health disparities. The Myers Midwifery Scholarship will help me reduce my student loan debt so I can make my care affordable to more women." |
Lisa Wiley (left)
|
Lisa Wiley - "I see my future midwife self in an ideal position to empower, collaborate with, and serve women with compassion, egalitarianism, and equanimity -- but in all honesty, none of this would be quite as possible were it not for outside assistance in shouldering the financial burden of a largely unemployable commitment of three years in midwifery school, not to mention the academic and experiential path it took to even apply to this rigorous program. Needless to say, I am unwaveringly grateful to donors present and future for their benevolent contributions to both mine and my future colleagues' pursuits to serve women and to embolden the profession of midwifery." |
First-ever Symposium co-convened by AME and NACPM! CPMs and Midwifery Educators: Contributing to a New Era in Maternity Care March 16-19, 2012 Airlie Center near Washington, D.C. We are at an unprecedented moment in time. Certified Professional Midwives are gaining significant momentum as primary maternity care providers in the U.S. and educators are positioning themselves to create the expanded CPM workforce for the future.
The steady growth and increasing impact of CPMs in recent years has led midwives, midwifery educators and advocates to begin thinking anew about the future needs of the profession. In 2010, the Association of Midwifery Educators (AME) surveyed midwifery educators across the U.S. to identify issues impacting the future of midwifery education. At the same time, the National Association of CPMs (NACPM), hearing from members about the importance of Federal recognition, and learning from their work on Capitol Hill about the opportunities for influencing maternity care policy, realized that it was imperative to bring CPMs together to explore these issues.
Midwives, educators and advocates - save the date! Learn more about this exciting symposium at www.CPMSymposium.org, or contact Bastyr University Department of Midwifery staff, Suzy Myers and Mary Yglesia, both part of the Symposium Convening Team.
