Greetings! We've had a great summer and hope you have, too. Suzy had the extraordinary opportunity to travel to Durban, S. Africa. She was a delegate to the triennial congress of the International Confederation of Midwives along with faculty member Karen Hays, who presented a paper about the Midwives' Association of Washington State, and former Seattle Midwifery School Executive Director, Jo Anne Myers-Ciecko. Annie represented Simkin Center at the 18th Annual DONA International Conference in Boston. Joining her were faculty members Kim James and Angie Dobbins-Frisbie. (see below). Now, as summer winds down, our energy is gearing up with the start of a new academic year. Beginning their three-year journey to becoming midwives in the Department of Midwifery are 18 new students, and a record number of students find their way to the Simkin Center. Later in the fall we look forward to joining with friends and advocates at the Postpartum Support International annual conference in Seattle, Sept. 15-17 (add link), and in October at a landmark, invitational Consensus Summit: "The Future of Home Birth in the US: Addressing Shared Responsibility", in Virginia. There is lots of work to do, but more people than ever interested in changing the tide of maternity care, addressing health inequities, rising c-section rates and infant and maternal mortality. We hope you enjoy this news, and the rest of your summer! Warmly, Annie and Suzy

Robbie Davis Floyd NPR Interview In case you missed this on Here and Now on NPR about home births - Robbie Davis Floyd was interviewed and she was terrific. It's all the buzz now that the CDCP announced that homebirths increased 20% in this country from 2004 to 2008. I'm sure they're continuing to rise - with a national cesarean section rate of 34%.

Childbirth Educator Training (CET) now offered as blended curriculum! Thanks to the Bastyr Strategic Initiative funding secured early this year, Simkin Center instructors and staff have developed the Simkin Learning Online platform on Moodle. The Fall 2011 course features an online Study Guide learning module, and 6-days of face-to-face learning. In the spring of 2012, the CET format will move to childbirth education theory online learning and 3-days of on-site learning. We hope this new format will make becoming a prenatal educator more accessible! Click here for more information and to register. | Carrie Kenner CET Instructor

Report from the ICM
Suzy Myers, LM, CPM, MPH NACPM Board of Directors
This was my third ICM, but by far the most memorable for the historic decision to hold this Congress in Africa for the first time. South Africa, our host country, provided a potent backdrop for the most critical issues facing the world's mothers and infants, for it is in Africa that the majority of preventable maternal and newborn deaths worldwide occur. I attended the ICM as both a representative of the National Association of Certified Professional Midwives (NACPM) and as a midwife educator interested in learning and networking about issues related to the strengthening of professional associations and midwifery education, goals that were amply met by this Congress.
