Greetings!

We are pleased to be writing to you this autumn from our new offices on the gorgeous Kenmore campus of Bastyr University. It's true!

Staff and students are all settling comfortably in with the generous help of colleagues here at Bastyr. The Department of Midwifery has a beautiful new classroom that looks out on a courtyard and right around the corner from the scrumptious vegetarian cafeteria!

Simkin Center feels like a gathering space, with art, chairs, a small library for visitors. You'll feel right at home when you see former SMS historic photos and beautiful art work in the halls. If you are in the area, please come visit us on the fourth floor!

Myers Midwifery Scholarships Awarded

We are thrilled to announce the first ever scholarship awards made from the Myers Midwifery Scholarship Fund. Three awards totaling $10,000 were made to truly deserving midwifery students. Congratulations to Helen Cotter (2011), Merka Martin (2012) and Emi McLaughlin (2012).

"I am so honoured to be one of the first recipients of the Myers Midwifery Scholarship Fund. I think it is incredibly appropriate that these two remarkable women, who have given and continue to give so much of themselves to this school, now have a fund established in their name. This award will make it possible for me to graduate with a Master's of Science in Midwifery, something that I never imagined was possible when I set out on this incredible and challenging journey in 2008. I hope that this fund will continue to support other students for many years to come." ~ Helen Cotter, 2011

Simkin Center Leadership Fund Awards

Simkin Center Leadership Fund (SCLF) merit scholarship program goal is to provide tuition reduction support to emerging leaders in the Allied Birth Vocations. The intent of the program is to increase the number of childbirth professionals with the desire, knowledge, skill and community membership or involvement to practice successfully in underserved ethnic, cultural, socio-economic and geographic communities. SCLF Fund awards nearly $4500 annually.

Suzanne Wilson, Scholarship RecipientOne of the latest recipients, Suzanne Wilson, wrote, "I intend to practice as a doula in rural regions of East Africa for women who often labor essentially alone in poorly staffed maternity hospitals or in the home.  Although there are traditional birth attendants, after having lived in Kenya for nearly 6 tears, I have found the majority of women that I came in contact with knowing very little about the birth process and receiving very little support during their pregnancy, labor and beyond.  I would like to enhance access to quality pregnancy related information in Kenya, and provide doula support to these women throughout their pregnancy and delivery."

Anti-racism Visioning Work Gains Momentum

Tim Callahan, Senior Vice President and Provost, announced in September the formation of an important new committee. The Diversity Committee will be responsible for designing and promoting a university-wide series of courses, workshops, and conversations on the topics of diversity, cultural competency and anti-racism. These topics have the potential to stimulate meaningful conversations throughout society at large but they are especially important areas of focus in institutions such as ours that propose to "educate future leaders in the natural health arts and sciences."

Post-MANA Conference Blog Entry from Women's eNews

mana conference logo"Shirley had just returned from the Midwives Alliance of North American conference in the Nashville, Tenn., area and she was buzzing. Her energy was infectious. And while we are both involved with maternal health issues across the board, as two black women we are also particularly concerned about the issues in our community. So the questions began to roll. Could midwives be key to helping reduce the high pre-term birth and low birth-weight baby rate that continue to plague black women of all socioeconomic levels? Could midwives help reverse the high exceptionally C-section rates among black women and reduce the shamefully rising maternal mortality rates among black women?"

Miles for Midwives 2010

runner at Miles for MidwivesThe Bastyr Department of Midwifery and the Simkin Center for Allied Birth Vocations were both proud to be supporting sponsors for Miles for Midwives. This year's Miles for Midwives Fun Run/Walk took place at Seward Park on Saturday, October 9, and proceeds benefit the Midwives' Association of Washington State and the Washington Affiliate of the American College of Nurse Midwives.

According to the Miles for Midwives web site "With over 200 registrants, a kaboodle of children and weather that stayed clear until most of the walkers got to the finish line, this was the most successful Miles for Midwives ever!" And our own Penny Simkin was the official starter of the event. Check out photos of Penny, along with students and graduates who attended and see all the merriment of the day on the Miles for Midwives Facebook page, and plan to join the fun next year.

From Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies News: Preemie Act in US Senate

On September 29, legislation was introduced by US Senators Lamar Alexander (R-TN) and Christopher Dodd (D-CT) to reauthorize the PREEMIE Act (Public Law 109-450). The reauthorization would continue and enhance federal support for research into the causes and prevention of premature birth and to reduce infant mortality caused by prematurity.

The legislation was originally enacted in 2006 and brought attention and resources to research addressing the issue of premature birth.  The reauthorization of the bill will ensure continued federal support for scientists and doctors who are studying the causes of premature birth and how they can be prevented.

PREEMIE is an abbreviation for the Prematurity Research Expansion and Education for Mothers who Delivery Infants Early Act.  For more information

Prolonged and Exclusive Breastfeeding Reduces the Risk of Infectious Diseases in Infancy

"Researchers in the Netherlands examined the associations of duration of exclusive breastfeeding with infections in the upper respiratory (URTI), lower respiratory (LRTI), and gastrointestinal tracts (GI) in infancy. The study found that exclusive breastfeeding in the first four months and partial breastfeeding thereafter significantly reduced respiratory and gastrointestinal morbidity in infants. The study, "Prolonged and Exclusive Breastfeeding Reduces the Risk of Infectious Diseases in Infancy"

by Duijts et al, was published in the journal Pediatrics.

TIME Magazine Article
American Women:
Birthing Babies at Home

Each year, some 25,000 American women opt to deliver their babies at home. Although that accounts for fewer than 1% of all births in the U.S., the figure is probably on the rise. From 2004 to 2006, the most recent year for which estimates are available, home birthing in the U.S. increased 5% after having gradually declined since 1990, according the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

New Federal Law Mandates Break Time for Nursing Mothers

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act ("PPACA"), which took effect when the PPACA was signed into law on March 23, 2010 (P.L. 111-148), amended Section 7 of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) to require employers to provide break times for nursing mothers. Employers must provide a place other than a bathroom, shielded from view, and free from intrusions from coworkers and the public for mothers to express breast milk. Mothers have the right to express breast milk as often as needed for the duration of one year.
