August 2010
Volume 8 No 5
Greetings!

The sun is shining, summer has finally arrived in the Pacific Northwest and we are busy, busy here at the school. So many interesting things to report in this issue - so read and hear about our recent midwifery graduates, faculty job openings, our upcoming move to Bastyr's Kenmore campus, a going away party and more!

First though, please note that enews will be coming from a new address soon. The new address will be midwiferydoulanews@bastyr.edu so please add this to your address book or preferred senders list so we don't get caught in your filters.

We are finally moving! At the end of August the trucks arrive to take us to our new home on the lovely Kenmore Campus. We are all sad to leave and excited about the opportunities ahead of us as we fully integrate with our Bastyr colleagues. If you are in the Seattle area and would like to join us for a going away party, please join us on August 27th here on the Talaris campus at 4:00-??? for wine and pie, maybe some tears and much excitement and many treasures to be had. RSVP to gdelgado@bastyr.edu and bring a pie to share! We'll have fun!

All the best,

Mary Yglesia, Department of Midwifery

Celebrate World Breastfeeding Week
August 1-7, 2010!

World Breastfeeding Week web site

La Leche League's focus for 2010 World Breastfeeding Week:
  • Revitalize activities within health systems, and among healthcare providers and communities to support women to achieve their breastfeeding intentions.
  • Inform people everywhere that protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding is a mother's right, a child's right, and a human right.
  • Enable women and all who care about human rights to advocate for healthcare systems which support breastfeeding.
  • Ensure that health workers who care for mothers and babies are adequately trained to counsel and support them in optimal infant feeding.
We join with the University of Washington Medical Center as they take time during 2010 World Breast Week to celebrate their Baby-Friendly status which they were awarded last fall. For a complete list of Baby-Friendly hospitals in the US, click here.

Time Magazine Asks, "Are C-Sections Overused? Rethinking Induced Labor"

"The rise in cesarean-section deliveries in recent years has been characterized by some as a key indication of the overmedicalization of childbirth. While the procedure undoubtedly saves lives and leads to better health outcomes for mothers and infants who face problems during pregnancy and labor, many experts say the procedure is being performed too often, and in many cases for nonmedical reasons, putting healthy women and babies at undue risk of complications of major surgery."

Response to the Wax Article in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology

(From the National Association of Certified Professional Midwives)

You may be aware of a recent article claiming to have found a 3-fold increase in neonatal mortality among home born infants when compared to hospital born babies.  This meta-analysis by Wax et al has been widely publicized by ACOG with a timing that appears to be designed to have maximum political impact.

The press, including the New York Times, reached out to NACPM, as well as to MANA, ACNM and other organizations, seeking comment. NACPM connected with home birth researchers (including Michael Klein from the University of British Columbia) and prepared the following comments for release to the press. Click here for the NACPM Press Release.

Last week, the Lancet stepped in with an editorial looking at the Wax meta-analysis

And today, the Washington Post  responded with a blog post that was, at least, a little more balanced in looking at the Wax article.

Great News from New York State!

Until now, NY State has required midwives to have a "written practice agreement" with an obstetrician as a precondition to practice. This law has effectively hindered the practice of many midwives when they have been unable to find a willing physician or have lost their practice agreements (sometimes due to a physician's liability insurance provider's requirement).

This year, the New York State Association of Licensed Midwives (NYSALM) began to advocate for the removal of the requirement to have a practice agreement by introducing the Midwifery Modernization Act, legislation that would remove the requirement. You can read more about their efforts by clicking here.

Through the efforts of activist midwives and midwifery supporters throughout the state, including SMS alumna Kate Finn, this legislation passed the House with overwhelming support, unanimously passed the Senate and was signed by the governor at the end of July!

Congratulations, NY Midwives and midwifery supporters!
