Home Birth in the New York Times
The birth community is abuzz over last weeks' article on the front page of the Home & Garden section of the NYT. In reference to home births in NYC, the Times reported that "local midwives say they have been swamped with calls and requests
in recent months, in some cases increasing their workload from two,
three or four deliveries a month to as many as 10." The article includes a slide show of home births in NYC.
There are, of course, the requisite warnings and comments via ACOG/AMA (fortunately tucked away on the last page of the article). However, these comments are followed by the article's concluding paragraph: "The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and the Royal
College of Midwives issued a joint statement in support, agreeing that
for most women, home births 'may confer considerable benefits for them
and their families.'"

This will take you to an online form you can use to offer your ideas on health care to the new administration. We know that access to the Midwives' Model of Care is part of the solution. Let's make sure President Elect Obama knows that too!

Pregnant in Seattle? - Models and Panelists Needed

Always had a hankering to be a model? Or, maybe you have never wanted to be a model, but you want to promote midwifery by helping to train new midwives. Seattle Midwifery School needs models to help assess the prenatal skills of our Senior students. All skills will be non-invasive, external and very kindly done! (Belly measuring, fetal heart tones, questions and answers, etc.) Models should be between 30-36 weeks pregnant at the time of the exam. We need a model for December 8, 2008, 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Models are paid $10 / hour plus lunch and snacks for full day. Please phone Sarah at 206.322.8834 x108 or send her an email.
The Simkin School is seeking pregnant women in their third trimester to be
panelists for our popular Labor Support Course - Training Birth Doulas.
It's a lot of fun and a great chance to help aspiring doulas learn
about the emotions of pregnancy. We need panelists for Saturday, January 24 and Saturday, February 28, 2009 from 1:00 to 2:00 pm. Honorarium offered. Contact us by email or call Annie Kennedy at 206.322.8834 x115 for more information.

And please share this with your friends by using the "forward email" link, which will give them the benefit of the graphics and photos. They will not be automatically subscribed to the list, but they can sign up if they like!
