SMS News & Events

Be BOLD
Hailed "the Vagina Monologues for birth" by author Christiane Northrup, MD, Birth delivers a theatrical experience that melds the unbridled hilarity, the unexpected poignancy, and the tragic truth about power in maternity care. The third year in Puget Sound, we have an amazing new director, some returning cast and other great new faces.  Even if you've seen Birth before, you don't want to miss this one!

Buy your tickets now for performances in Seattle (9/5, 6 & 7), Vashon (9/20), Tacoma (9/26) and Olympia (9/27).  And stay tuned for details on a visit to Seattle by BIRTH playwright, Karen Brody. Proceeds benefit SMS and The Birth Attendants (who provide doula services to women at the WA Correction Center for Women). See below for SMS and Olympia BOLD Red Tent.

If you have friends outside of WA who are interested in BOLD events in their area, they can visit the national web site.

Childbirth Trauma Article in Wall Street Journal

Faculty member Penny Simkin was among those quoted in a recent WSJ article on birth trauma and PTSD.

Some of the statistics reported in the WSJ article are thanks to Childbirth Connection's "New Mothers Speak Out," based on CC's latest survey of postpartum women. See the next article.

"New Mothers Speak Out" Report

Childbirth Connection - click to visit site
On August 5, Childbirth Connection  released the latest report in their groundbreaking series of surveys on the childbearing experiences of women in the United States.

The title of Childbirth Connections' press release offers a glimpse of the results of this report: "New Mothers Speak Out Report paints a troubling picture of American women in the postpartum period--many mothers face a broad range of social, emotional and physical health and workplace challenges, often with little or no support."

Visit the web site to download the press release and the New Mothers Speak Out Report.
