A word from our President
Thanks to all of our new and renewing CLANZ premium members. We appreciate your support in continuing to deliver improved services to members and advancing the interests of in-house lawyers in New Zealand.
Last week your CLANZ Committee met for the 2011 Strategy Day to discuss issues relevant to in-house lawyers and to plan for the coming year. The day was a very successful one and by the end of it we had:
- substantially advanced planning for Conference 2012 - agreed a workplan for Regulatory and Law Reform issues - progressed our events calendar for member events
- finalised the 2011 business plan and priorities

NZLS library services relevant for in-house lawyers
In-house lawyers may not be aware of the full range of resources and services offered by the NZLS library. The libraries offer invaluable tools that make it easier to stay on top of legal and corporate developments.
Situated in Auckland, Wellington, Dunedin, and Christchurch the libraries also offer a nationwide delivery service . Wellington based law librarian Robin Anderson says their collection goes wider than just legal information and includes extensive resources through the EPIC collection of databases. This includes reference resources in the Gale database in areas including business economics and theory, general business and access to the respected LegalTrac database of 1400 legal publications. Another of the EPIC databases is Academic OneFile which provides extensive coverage of the physical sciences, technology, medicine, social sciences, the arts, theology and literature with millions of articles available in both PDF and HTML full-text with no restrictions. It is updated daily and even includes full-text coverage of the New York Times back to 1995.

CLANZ Salutes Distinguished Service
CLANZ Vice-President Grant Adam recently presented 2011 CLANZ President's Award winner Neil Williamson with his trophy for Distinguished Service at a morning tea at the Ministry for Social Development where Neil has contributed twenty-five years service. Rupert Ablett-Hampson, recently confirmed Chief Legal Advisor at MSD, congratulated Neil on behalf of the Ministry and the in-house legal profession and described him as "New Zealand's pre-eminent practitioner in the field of welfare and child protection law". Accepting the award with his customary modesty, Neil said he was "happy to make a difference" through his chosen field.

Primal Leadership
If you attended CLANZ Conference 2011 and enjoyed Paul Pringle's leadership session, you might like the latest thinking from the Institute of Strategic Leadership on primal leadership in modern times:
History reminds us that economic extremes (both growth and recession) can have significant unfavourable consequences. During these competitive periods some people are driven by greed or anxiety and fear, and often revert to being political animals; using their primal instincts to thrive or survive. In the context of leadership, the world post-2008 is a very different one to that in which leaders grew up and led in their careers to-date. "In the past we had steady tail winds and relatively smooth seas. Now we have to tack into changeable head winds and have cross tides and many competitors to contend with."

The Devil's Own Golf Tournament
This year is the 77th Devil's Own Golf Tournament in Palmerston North. NZ's longest running private golf tournament, the Devil's Own is an invitation only event among members of the New Zealand legal profession and judiciary.
This year, a special, and inaugural CLANZ/Devils Own trophy is being unveiled to reward the "In-house Lawyer" with the best qualifying round net score.
So good members of CLANZ (and you can be male or female, the DO welcomes all), we leave the honour of all NZ in-house lawyers in your hands. We know you will do us proud.
The tournament is being held this year between 17 and 19 September 2011 (with a practice round, for those that want, on 16 September 2011).
The entry fee for each participant (including dinner on Saturday night) is $300. There is a less strenuous format called the Gatley Section which sees competition over two rounds of golf (stableford scoring).
More information can be found here . Entries are being accepted now.

Opening up of top level domain names
The race will soon be on to register top level domain names with ICANN's decision to allow any name to be registered as a domain. Instead of being able to just register a domain in front of the dot com, dot net and so on you will be able to register dot cars or dot music. Are you ready for the next challenge to your IP? Renault, News Corp, and the Potential Perils of Internal Investigations
"News Corporation has launched an internal investigation into the alleged misconduct at the center of the phone-hacking scandal, and as the French carmaker Renault learned the hard way this year, much can go wrong when a company undertakes a task like this. News Corp would be wise to avoid the kinds of errors that Renault made when confronted by similarly dramatic accusations of employee wrongdoing." Reports Corporate Counsel
