Welcome to the April edition of eCLANZ |
|
|
From the President
The CLANZ Awards give the opportunity for the achievement and contribution of in-house lawyers within their organisation and the wider community to be recognised and rewarded. We encourage all members to nominate someone for a well-deserved award as the nomination period has been extended.
We look forward to seeing many of you at conference on 12 and 13 May. We will ensure that some of the key learnings from conference are shared through upcoming eCLANZ and on our website so you can get a flavour of the hot issues facing your fellow in-house counsel even if you couldn't leave your desk for long enough to attend.
Best wishes
Jeremy Valentine - CLANZ President |
CLANZ Awards - Deadline extended
Nominations for the 2011 CLANZ Awards were due to close Friday 22 April but we had overlooked that date falling on Good Friday. We are therefore extending the deadline for nominations out to Friday 29 April. If you or someone you know has demonstrated excellence in the practice of in-house law, nominate them online today.
Just to remind you, the categories are the CLANZ-Bell Gully Young In-House Lawyer of the Year with a scholarship package worth $5000, the CLANZ-LexisNexis In-House Lawyer of the Year with a scholarship package worth $5000 and the CLANZ-Wigley & Company Community Contribution Award with a $7000 contribution to the community initiative. |
Recipe for Canterbury
The CLANZ pre-conference events and fundraisers for Canterbury hosted by Bell Gully in Auckland and Wellington this week were very successful. A total of $7413.50 was raised which will be shared equally between the Canterbury Branch Benevolent Fund for affected legal practitioners and the Salvation Army Canterbury Earthquake Appeal.

Our grateful thanks go to all who attended and contributed to these worthy causes. We particularly thank our generous donors Fisher & Paykel Appliances, Metrotile, KiwiRail Limited, Working Style, ANZ National Bank, EventMergers, Hotel InterContinental, Spotless Services, Kawerau Estate and Charles Finny of Saunders Unsworth, WineLink Limited, Holiday Inn Auckland Airport, Skywalk, Novotel Lakeside Rotorua, Rainbow Springs, Agrodome Rotorua, Skyline, James Cook Grand Chancellor, Copthorne Hotel & Resort Solway Park, John Anderson, Weta Cave, Stardome and special thanks to our hosts and principal sponsor Bell Gully.
At the Wellington fundraiser we learned about artisan cheesemaking from Lisa Harper of Sherrington Grange. Several of you enquired where you could find Lisa's cheese as it is unlike any cheese we have ever tasted. Read more |

Canterbury tales
Over the past month, we have learned of some of the generous contributions made by our partner and sponsor organisations, at an individual and collective level. Having listened to the Canterbury Branch President Allister Davis' moving account at the recent NZLS Council meeting of how the earthquakes have affected his family, the legal profession in Christchurch and the wider community, it is clear that the rest of New Zealand cannot do enough to help.
CLANZ acknowledges the generosity of the professional services firms and sponsor organisations we are involved with and are proud that the New Zealand business community, including many of our member organisations, has rallied in such a significant way to this national tragedy.

 Getting the Recipe Right
CLANZ Conference 2011 is close to fully subscribed with 310 of the 315 delegate places filled. If you are still hoping to come to conference, contact Colleen Walters at EventMergers to grab one of these final five places.
For one delegate, conference will deliver more than just a fantastic experience for two days. One of our premium members who registered before 31 March will enjoy a luxury long weekend in Aitutaki, courtesy of Pacific Resort and CLANZ.
Jeremy Salmond, Acting Treasury Solicitor and Manager, Legal Group has recently returned from his Pacific Resort Aitutaki experience which he won at the 2010 CLANZ Conference and which he describes as "Awesome!" He goes on to say "Well that's what I thought on winning three luxury nights for two at the Pacific Resort, Aitutaki. IP Counsel Navigate the Perils and Promises of Social Media
If one message came out loud and clear at ALM's fourth "Social Media: Risks & Rewards" conference, it's that for corporations trying to tame social media, time is measured in dog years. Social media has been changing so fast, and its ramifications are so profound, that corporate counsel are scrambling to try to figure out how to leash the risks and sprint with the opportunities, reported Law Technology News. Master Chef's next challenger
We thought we should share with you a very precise recipe created for the CLANZ Recipe Hub that didn't end up getting submitted but which definitely deserves a wider audience than the legal team amongst which it was circulated. Heath Smith from ANZ Legal was the inspired creator of this concoction and apparently stressed that the 5 spots are key to this recipe's success.
Serves 1
Ingredients: 1. 2 slices of bread 2. Butter 3. Vegemite
Instructions: 1. Toast and butter bread 2. Add 5 spots of vegemite 3. Eat
Brilliant!
Don't forget to test and vote for the CLANZ Recipe Hub recipes that were actually submitted. |
