MPI Monthly UpdateJanuary, 2011
From the President's Desk...
Dear Friend of Freedom,

Welcome back! I hope you had a restful and rejuvenating holiday season.  Now it's time to get back to work.
First a little housekeeping is in order.  Here are a few highlights of MPI's 2010:
  • Two major forums and several smaller events in four cities with a total of over 400 attendees.
  • Four major studies on topics ranging from environmental policy to budget reform.  And of course we've given away about 1,500 copies of the Pork Report and are printing more.
  • 54,000 website visits with over 4,000 hours of Montanans perusing our products, ideas, and information.  And that doesn't even count OpenGovMT, BigSkySearch, TweetMontana, or Montana Watchdog.  Speaking of which...
  • Montana Watchdog is now averaging over 8,000 visits per month and its stories are regularly carried in newspapers across the state, although notably none of the major dailies (except when a similar story appears the next day under their own byline).

And I promised some changes for 2011.  Here are a few of them:

  • Mike Faw is our new operations manager.  Chances are if you call it's his voice you'll hear as I'll be spending a lot more time on the road revving people up for the battles to come.
  • We'll soon officially announce this, but we're happy to share that Rob Natelson is joining us as Senior Fellow in Constitutional Jurisprudence.  Rob will be conducting a Constitution road show, for lack of a better term, as part of our effort to provide a better understanding of the practical benefits of our founding documents.
  • We'd also like to welcome Abby Lair, our intern from MSU this semester.  Abby will mostly be helping put together a youth outreach program for us.  If you're feeling guilty about spending all of the next generation's money, let me know and I'll give you some ideas about how to pay some of it back by exposing them to the principles we so utterly failed to follow.

And of course we're actively supporting sound policy in the 2011 legislature by providing good ideas and solid analysis for our elected representatives.

Keep up the fight - if I can still use that word - and keep in touch.  This is your MPI and we need you involved if we're going to continue to advance the cause of freedom, responsibility, and limited government in Montana.

In Freedom,
Carl Graham
Major Project Updates

- New Montana Renewable Portfolio Standards Study! Montana's RPS mandates will raise the cost of electricity by as much as 28%, hurting families and driving businesses out of the state.  Our study, conducted with the American Tradition Institute, outlines the costs and fallacies of this destructive policy that's already in place in Montana. The two page Policy Note is here if you don't have time to read the whole study.

- State Employee Pay and School Spending Site: We've added state employee compensation to our school spending site and renamed it all www.OpenGovMT.org.  Get full compensation, sortable by location, job, and more, for all state employees in one easy location!  We've also updated BigSkySearch.info with more examples of states that "get it" and are providing true transparency for taxpayers.

- Our 2011 Legislature Resource Page has our studies, Watchdog highlights, and links to lots of other resources you can use to keep track of what's going on in Helena.

- Coming soon: Montana Medicaid Study: Montana's share of Medicaid spending has increased at nearly 9% per year since 1990, and  Obamacare will increase our share of Medicaid spending by $80 million per year by 2019.  By opting out of the federal system and its mandates, we could save as much as $109 million between 2013 and 2019, putting us on a sustainable path with a fair and equitable system under taxpayer control. We'll show you how in February.

-  Pork Report: MPI members should have already received your Pork Reports in the mail.  If you're not an MPI member, what are you waiting for?  Join here and help pull the load!

- Montana Budget Studies: We want you to know how Montana got into this fiscal mess and how to fix it. Read the studies, or at least the short policy notes summarizing them to get informed:
  • State Spending Growth and Future Deficits explains how exploding budgets over a six year period resulted in unsustainable spending - with Department by Department breakdowns.
  • Budgeting for Fiscal Discipline explains the state's underfunded pensions and other liabilities, how we got them, and how to overhaul our state budgeting system to fix them for the long term.

- Tweet Montana:  Keep up with what your elected officials are saying by automatically following their Twitter feeds

  - Montana Watchdog: Make Montana Watchdog an everyday stop for the news you won't get from legacy media outlets. Our two investigative reporters are both in Helena during the 2011 session going beyond the headlines to give you information you can use.  You can also get more perspective and analysis from the blog and Twitter feeds.   Follow us on Twitter

 - Health Care Reform and Global Warming Resource Pages: We're continuing to update our health care reform resource page with analysis of the bill and news about initiatives across the country to oppose it.  We're also helping you keep up with climate change news on our Global Warming Resources Page.
Grow with MPI in 2011
From our founding day, we have been grounded in the belief that accurate information about government finance is the foundation of good policy in a free society. Through our non-partisan, independent research, we educate and advise lawmakers, reporters and citizens about how to improve the fiscal health of Montana for the long-term.  None of this work would be possible without the generosity of our supporters and we encourage you to consider supporting MPI with a year-end contribution.  By making a tax-deductible investment in MPI, you will be a valuable partner in helping to assure that our research and publications continue to shape sound policy in Montana - for the good of future generations as well as our own.

About MPI
The Montana Policy Institute (MPI) is a free market think tank focused on Montana issues.  We provide credible nonpartisan expertise and analysis to help Montanans advocate for policies that are based on a respect for freedom, an expectation of responsibility, and the idea that government intervention should be the last rather than first resort when addressing public policy challenges.
