From the President's Desk...
Dear Friend of Freedom,
Well it's been a depressing month for free choice and self government but we've hopefully reached a turning point and not a slippery slope. The forces of big government and artificially created "rights" are doubling down and assuming that passage of the health care bill will give them momentum toward the large, overweening government they want, and that they think the rest of us need. We need to show them that it's not momentum they're seeing, it's overreach.
I wrote down a statement - I can't remember from where - that I keep on my desk and that I think sums up our situation:
The Revolutionary War was over a 1 cent tax on tea. But it wasn't about the tax, it was about being ruled by people who didn't care about our lives but saw us as ATM machines - a source of revenue for their own grand ideas. We will be governed with our consent, but we will not be ruled.
The history of nations that trade freedom for security, that embrace the comfort of mediocrity, and that place equality of outcomes over equality of opportunity is not good. We became the most productive, prosperous, and powerful nation in history because we're different and, yes I'll say it, exceptional. If we cease to be the shining city on the hill we'll join the list of nations that rose to greatness on the strengths of a free society and then collapsed under the weight of a bureaucratic welfare state. And the world will be worse off for it as the ideas and innovations that only a free society can produce will be lost.
But it doesn't have to be that way. We need to keep up the momentum for freedom and speak truth to power. We need to show up at rallies; we need to tell our elected officials what we think (like in this poll asking the MT Attorney General to join other states to contest the health care takeover), and we have to support people and organizations (like MPI!) whose mission it is to promote individual freedom and responsibility. There is too much at stake to do anything less.

Major Project Updates
- Health Care Reform: We're continuing to update our health care reform resource page with analyses of the bill and news about initiatives across the country to oppose it. This battle is far from over as more people begin to see the smoke and mirror accounting and political rationing of benefits under the plan.
- Global Warming Resources Page: It looks like climate change legislation may be next on the agenda, and we're keeping you up to date with both the science and policy that will shape the course of future energy policy and Montana's energy potential.
- Montana Watchdog: We've got a not-quite-ready-for-prime-time but ready-for-you-to-look-at version of the MontanaWatchdog.org site up and running. We're populating it with stories and bringing up all the functional elements. Take a look and let us know what you think about it. Our goal is to report beyond the press release and let you see what's happening in state and local government that the mainstream media doesn't have time to investigate.
- Budget Review: Montana's budget is going from a large surplus to a deficit for 2011. How does that happen? Some people say we're not collecting enough revenue, but we say the state's spending too much. That should be the mantra for all of us: It's not a revenue problem, it's a spending problem. So to help people make that argument we've got a study in the works that will clearly lay out how spending has increased over the past decade or so in a way that was clearly unsustainable over the long term. Look for it in late April.
- Property Rights Forum: MPI, along with PERC hosted a property rights forum in Bozeman on February 18th. We had national experts to provide broad perspectives on property rights, including CATO's Randal O'Toole, PERC's Terry Anderson, and environmental expert Steven Hayward, as well as a range of Montana experts from academia, state and local government, and business to talk about threats to our rights and how to protect them. Nearly 230 people showed up to learn and to express their concerns about this most fundamental of rights. You can see what we did, including videos of all 15 presentations here.
- Cap and Trade: MPI's Cap and Trade study was released in February and is gaining relevance as the Senate takes up its energy legislation. This study outlines the costs to Montana jobs, incomes, production, and state revenues if a Waxman/Markey type of bill were to pass. "Green" policies do have a price, and it's important that we inform that side of the debate. |
