Spring Travel Series Kicks Off this Month

In May, the Main Library offers two programs for travelers. This year's series begins Wednesday, May 23, with Venice: City of Ideas, presented by Lonely Planet author Alison Bing. On Wednesday, May 30, the series continues with The Basics of Medical Tourism, addressing the growing trend to travel oversees for inexpensive medical procedures. Both programs begin at 6 pm and will run for 90 minutes. The series will continue in June.

Youth Poet Laureate Candidates Have until May 15 to Apply
The Oakland Public Library, the City of Oakland, and Youth Speaks are joining forces to name the City's first ever Youth Poet Laureate. Teen Poets from Oakland can compete for this honor, which will include a $5,000 scholarship and public speaking appearances for the winner.
Submissions will be accepted April 1 through May 15.

Silent Auction Benefitting OPL will Feature Alice In Wonderland Collectibles

Sponsored by the Friends of the Oakland Public Library, The Bookmark Bookstore in Old Oakland will have several Alice in Wonderland themed items up for sale and silent auction. The two silent auctions will include one elaborate doll house and a set of Alice in Wonderland figurines.
Come celebrate Alice Liddell's 160th birthday at the Bookmark by bidding on an item or buying an Alice book! Alice Pleasance Liddell, born May 4, 1852, inspired the children's classic Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll.
