Best-selling Mystery Writers Will Discuss the Exotic Locales from their Recent Books

One of the great pleasures that can be gained from reading mysteries is following a novel's protagonist to far-flung places. To discuss this enticing topic with avid fans of their books, some of the genre's most successful practitioners are coming to the Main Library. The event is called Mysterious Places: An Evening with Cara Black, Rhys Bowen, and Olen Steinhauer.

WANTED: Youth Poet Laureate

                        

The Oakland Public Library, the City of Oakland, and Youth Speaks are joining forces to name the City's first ever Youth Poet Laureate. Teen Poets from Oakland can compete for this honor, which will include a $5,000 scholarship and public speaking appearances for the winner.

 

Submissions will be accepted April 1 through May 15.

El dia de los ninos/El dia de los libros (children's day/book day)

  

The American Library Association has declared April 30 el día de los niños/el día de los libros  - a celebration of children, families, and reading that emphasizes the importance of literacy for children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds. This year's theme is Many Children, Many Cultures, Many Books.

 

Petting Zoo BlissThe Oakland Public Library's Children's Services Department has some fun events planned during the last week of the month - including a bilingual clown and a traveling petting zoo.

E-Government Literacy Class Offered at Main

Whether you're searching for job, education, or health information or had a dispute with your landlord and need help finding resources, this hands-on course will provide you with the tools you need. The course provides an overview of the many e-government resources available on a variety of topics and will teach you how to navigate government websites.

Get Free Tax Help at the Library

 

taxes, taxes, taxes!For anyone who can use some good news during tax time, the Oakland Public Library, in partnership with AARP, can help you file your taxes. From February 1 through April 16, trained volunteers will be on hand to help residents fill out their forms at several library locations.
