Taking a short break from conducting research at zero gravity, a NASA astronaut is going to drop in at the 81st Avenue East Oakland Community Library to talk to kids. The program is part of NASA's Destination Station campaign promoting awareness of research on the International Space Station. Astronaut Rex Walheim will come to the library to make a fun and educational presentation that future astronauts (as well as adults committed to Earth-bound careers) are sure to enjoy. Join us! Library Offers Class to Help Seniors Avoid Scams and Consumer Fraud

The Oakland Public Library is offering a free course geared for seniors, called Consumer Fraud: Scams Targeting Seniors and Tips for Protection and Prevention.
Join Pat Macholl from Legal Assistance for Seniors for this seminar which will explain identity theft in its different forms, provide practical tips on how to recognize and prevent identity theft, discuss other common scams and forms of fraud, and provide information on referral sources and where to get help. There will also be a demonstration on identifying and using e-government resources to help prevent identity theft.

OPL will be hosting Volunteer Information Sessions for members of the public to learn about opportunities to volunteer for the Library. The next sessions will be held as follows:

The goal of the upcoming sessions is to offer information about library and related programs that are actively recruiting new volunteers.

Piedmont Ave. Branch Celebrating 80th Anniversary March 10

EVERYONE IS INVITED! Join us in celebrating the Piedmont Avenue Branch's 80th birthday. There will be live jazz, refreshments, children's activities, and great company. Dress in your best 1930s outfit to help us recapture the era in which this branch began; the best dressed will win a special prize!
In conjunction with this milestone celebration, Branch Manager Jenera Burton is collecting memories of the Piedmont Branch. Please send her your writing, drawing, or poetry about the Piedmont Branch. You can use this online form if you want to contribute something. |

Get Free Tax Help at the Library
For anyone who can use some good news during tax time, the Oakland Public Library, in partnership with AARP, can help you file your taxes. From February 1 through April 16, trained volunteers will be on hand to help residents fill out their forms at several library locations.
