Liu Yu, author of Awakening the Sleeping Tiger, to Speak at Asian Branch
Asian Branch, 388 9th St., Ste. 190
Saturday, November 5, 2:30 PM - 4:00 PM
California author Liu Yu will appear at the Asian Branch, and discuss her book, Awakening the Sleeping Tiger: the True Story of a Professional Chinese Athlete, co-authored with Dawn Cerf.
In Awakening the Sleeping Tiger, an eleven-year-old girl grabs her chance to avoid being sent to the Chinese countryside in the government's plan to re-educate its young people, even though it means leaving her family behind. She catapults to the top of Communist society, living the dream of every child in China. Although the reality is altogether different, this doesn't stop her quiet determination to become a champion. When feuding coaches threaten her dream, she realizes she must find a way to take control of her own destiny.
Author Liu Yu reveals the hidden side of both Chinese sports training and the Chinese culture in her remarkable memoir. She is a former team member of the Jiangsu Province Professional Wushu Team and a graduate of Beijing University of Physical Education. Liu Yu was a U.S. Wushu Team coach and currently owns the Wushu Taichi Center in San Luis Obispo.
