Two Great Music Programs at Main Library


Ramblin' Round: Songs of the Open Road

Thursday, October 13, 6:30 - 7:30 pm

Main Library, 125 14th Street

 

Tim HoltTim Holt will perform and discuss the songs of folk artists Tom Paxton, Utah Phillips, Woody Guthrie, and a number of others in a program that will include railroad songs, hobo songs, songs of the Western migration, and Dust Bowl ballads. Along the way he will weave in some of the poetry of that great bard of the Open Road, Walt Whitman.

 

 

The American Songbook of Jazz

Paul VornHagenSinger-saxophonist-flutist Paul VornHagen will perform and discuss American Songbook classics by George and Ira Gershwin, Duke Ellington, Rodgers adn Hart, Cole Porter, Thelonious Monk, and others. He will be accompanied by keyboardist Ben Solorow.

Commemorating Black Panther Party History Month, and the 45th Anniversary of the Black Panther Party, the Oakland Public Library will host a Black Panther Film Festival on Saturday, October 8, 2011, from 12 to 4:30 p.m. In what has become an annual tradition, films about the Black Panthers will be screened at the Main Library, 125 14th Street, in the Bradley C. Walters Community Room. Alumni of the Black Panther Party are co-hosting the event and will be on hand for the screenings.

  

 

 

Jessica Mitford Subject of Talk and Exhibit, Personal Library For Sale

Jessica MitfordLocal author Peter Y. Sussman, editor of Decca: The Letters of Jessica Mitford, will discuss the life and career of this crusading journalist and Oakland resident.

 

This program commemorates the generous gift of books from the personal library of Jessica Mitford and her husband, Robert Treuhaft to the Friends of the Oakland Public Library Bookstore.

 

 
Mitford Collection Booksale
starts November 2

Books will go on sale at the Bookmark, 721 Washington Street, in Old Oakland, beginning November 2.

 

An exhibit, including a selction of books from the Mitford collection, will be on display the endire month of October on the main level of the Main Library.

 
 
Lots Going on at the Library For Halloween and Day of the Dead

 

batsGhouls and goblins big and small know they can count on the Oakland Public Library for good, scary fun this time of year. A number of library locations are putting on events for Halloween and the Day of the Dead, including crafts, scary storytimes, and sweet sugar skull decorating!

The Bookmark Bookstore, in Old Oakland, is operated by the Friends of the Oakland Public Library. The store is open from  10:30 a.m. to  5:30 p.m. each day during the sale.
