Burning Man to be Topic of Library Discussion

Burning Man: Topic of Discussion Aug 7 at Main.

Burning Man is always a hot topic, and before the desrt festival gets started later this month, the Main Library will host a panel of experts to discuss the annual festival in the desert.

 

Steven T. Jones will be on hand to discuss his new book, The Tribes of Burning Man: How an Experimental City in the Desert is Shaping the New American Counterculture. Other panelists will include Marion Goodell, Burning Man Board Member; Michael Snook of NIMBY; Karen Cusolito of American Steel; and Syd Gris of Opulent Temple.

 

Nothing will be torched during this event, but it should be a crackling discussion. Read more

 

 

Library and Museum Team Up to Celebrate End of Summer Reading

One World, Many StoriesIt's fun for the entire family as the Oakland Public Library's Summer Reading Program draws to a close with a big party at the Oakland Museum of California on Sunday, August 7, from 12 to 4 p.m. The party will take place in the Museum Gardens, 1000 Oak Street.

 

The celebration links two fantastic summer events: the library's Summer Reading Program and the Oakland Museum of California's Free First Sundays-for a double dose of culture, entertainment, fun, and learning.

81st Avenue Branch Library to Stay Open Late on Friday and Saturday Nights in August

 

During the month of August, the Joint City of Oakland/Oakland Unified School District Late Night Live! initiative will include the 81st Avenue East Oakland Community Library. On Friday and Saturday nights in August, the library will remain open until 10 pm.

 

The Library is currently committed to participate in the Late Night Live! Initiative through Saturday, August 27. The only exception will be Saturday, August 13, when the 81st Avenue East Oakland Community Library will be closed due to the citywide budget shortage. Read more 

Covered Wagon at AAMLO represents African American Migrants to the West. 

Come See the Covered Wagon at AAMLO

 

The covered wagon currently on dispaly at the African American Museum and Library represents the western migration of African Americans in the 19th century. It is an exact replica built by Sacramento State Professor Shirley Moore with the help of William Pettis and a group of volunteers. Read more
