Reminder! All Patron Records to be Updated Annually

In December 2009, the Oakland Public Library asked all of its patrons to update or confirm their library record once per year. Beginning November 1, 2010, any patron who does not have an updated record will not be able to check out materials nor have access to online resources.

The good news is that re-registering is a simple process! Find out what you need to know, and what you need to do, in order to re-register.

A Day in the Life at OPL

October 6 was Snapshot Day at the Library. Snapshot Day was a statewide campaign overseen by the California Library Association to document and showcase the value of libraries in our communities. Data was collected, patrons provided testimonials, and photos were taken to capture a "day in the life" at the Library.

Said one patron: "The library is such a great resource on so many levels! It doesn't just offer books, but community groups, literacy work, and a certain deep and abiding sense that a well-stocked library is one of the foundations of a great society."

The Oakland Public Library participated along with hundreds of other libraries (big, small, public, and private) throughout the state. Here are a pair of heartwarming images captured during the day.

Hawa Kaba Brings "Memory and Passion" to AAMLO

African American Museum and Library at Oakland, 659 14th Street

Saturday, November 6 - Thursday, December 23, 2010

Hawa Kaba Kaba's paintings capture with beauty and passion both memories of the artist's native West Africa and the complexities of life in multi-cultural Canada. Kaba's People of the Mandé-Bčn
She combines photocopied images, printed matter, paint, and found materials in paintings that are charged with personal feeling and with a sense social awareness. In her highly textured works she celebrates the culture and landscape of Africa, the lives of women, the cause of social justice, and her own memories. Kaba's works shift from the personal to the political, but always with a fine-tuned aesthetic sense emerging from the fabric of everyday life.

Kaba explores the theme of cultural diversity as a multi-layered experience. Ina number of the paintings, the artist combines an African textile with the Arabic writing of the Koran (reflecting the artist's Muslim heritage), Hebrew lettering, and signs of contemporary life, giving a sense of a happy coexistence of people from many different backgrounds.

In this exhibition Kaba, who is based in Ottawa, Canada, will exhibit 25 works that represent some of the major themes of her oeuvre.
