Author Mary Roach to Speak at Dimond Branch
Tuesday, October 5, 6 - 8 p.m.
Dimond Branch, 3565 Fruitvale Ave.
In what promises to be a lively and festive occasion, local author Mary Roach will share passages from her bestselling new book, Packing for Mars, at the Dimond Branch Library.
Ms. Roach is an engaging speaker as well as a writer with a flair for lively prose and unexpected subjects. Packing for Mars is not a dry summation of the Space Race. The book considers everything from space monkeys to sex at zero gravity. Ultimately, Ms. Roach reveals the challenges that must be tackled before human beings are able to visit the Red Planet. As a Salon.com review put it: "Her focus on the needs and engineering constraints of the human body and mind in an off-Earth environment refreshingly takes the spotlight off hardware and glorious conquest and places it squarely ... on the ridiculous yet noble human animal at the center of space exploration."
Ms. Roach has already plumbed the depths of a variety of major subjects in books such as Bonk (about sex), Spook (about death) and Stiff (about cadavers). She has a knack for coming up with answers to the big questions, and for inspecting her subjects intently, and from all angles, in order to discover all that is interesting about them, much to her readers'delight. She is a resident of Oakland.
Copies of Packing for Mars will be available for purchase.

Main Library Presents A Toast to Mystery
Saturday, October 2, 2-4 p.m.
Main Library - West Auditorium, 125 14th Street
Some go down into cool and dark wine cellars to retrieve vintage bottles before dinner. Others, with darker sensibilities, re-emerge in the wee hours with original manuscripts rife with intrigue. The Oakland Public Library is pleased to present two writers who fall into the latter category for A Toast to Mystery, an afternoon of literary suspense. Nadia Gordon and Peter Lewis will read passages from their latest Wine Country thrillers at the Main Library. Books will be available for purchase and signing. Read more... |

Films Consider Worldwide Influence of Black Panthers
Black Panther Party International Film Festival
Main Library - West Auditorium, 125 14th Street
Saturday, October 23, 2010, 11:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
October is Black Panther Party History Month, and the Oakland Public Library's programming to mark the occasion will culminate with the Black Panther Party International Film Festival. While the history of the Black Panther Party is obviously of local significance, having been founded in Oakland in the mid-1960s, this year's films cast an outward look - on the spread of the party to other parts of the world, with proponents and chapters in far flung places such as New Zealand, Tanzania, and Israel. Admission to the festival is free. Read more...
