Library Closing Several Days This Month
Holidays, City Budget Closure Mean Short Week at OPL
Labor Day, a citywide business shutdown (due to the budget crisis) and California Admissions Day all fall on the same week, from September 6 to September 10, which means a markedly reduced schedule for the Oakland Public Library. Added to those closure dates, the branches (but not the Main library) will close on Tuesday, in observance of Labor Day (since branches are regularly closed on Monday). As the following schedule indicates, the only day to visit a branch library that week will be Wednesday.
Here's how the schedule breaks down during the period from September 4 to September 11:
Saturday, Sept. 4 - Main and branches open, regular hours.
Sunday, Sept. 5 - Main open, regular hours; branches closed.
Monday, Sept. 6 - Labor Day. Main and branches closed.
Tuesday, Sept. 7 - Main open, regular hours; branches closed for Labor Day.
Wednesday, Sept. 8 - Main and branches open, regular hours.
Thursday, Sept. 9 - California Admissions Day. Main and branches closed.
Friday, Sept. 10 - Citywide business shutdown. Main and branches closed.
Saturday, Sept. 11 - Library resumes regular schedule.

Oakland Word Collections of Prose & Poetry Viewable Online
Oakland Word was a smash hit. The writing program, funded by a grant from the California State Library, ran from February to July. Free workshops and seminars in fiction, poetry, and memoir writing yielded thoughtful and provocative material collected in the anthology In Your Ear, an essential read for anyone interested in experiencing the vitality of Oakland.
In the book's introduction, author Daniel Alarcon makes a case for the importance of the writings that follow: "In this diverse and polyglot metropolitan area, we must get to know our neighbors' stories. As I went through this collection, I found to my delight that each text revealed another part of this unique city." The entire book can be read online. Click here: In Your Ear.
A poetry chapbook, This Be The Town, produced by participants in the Oakland Word, has also been posted online. Click here to read it: This Be The Town.
