Artist Milton Bowens Brings "510 Experience" to AAMLO
 
Milton Bowens' "The 510 Experience" Opens at AAMLO May 1. As part of a monthlong, citywide exhibit, artist Milton Bowens will display "Oakland: A Love Supreme" at AAMLO, starting May 1, 3 p.m. The exhibit will run all month.
 
Bowens, who goes by the handle Milton 510, is launching an ambitious, five-part exhibit that will display in five locations throughout Oakland. Called "The 510 Experience," the entire exhibit will encompass 50 new works forming a unique survey of urban culture, community, family, and faith.
 
The artist will be on hand for the May 1 opening, and will give a talk 5 - 6 p.m.

Spring 2010 Travel Series Lineup Announced

The Oakland Public Library's annual travel series is held at the Main Library (125 14th Street at Oak) in downtown Oakland. All programs will be held at 6 p.m. in the library's West Auditorium (basement level).

DownsWalking San Francisco

Local guidebook writer Tom Downs, author of Walking San Francisco, will share his favorite walks of the City by the Bay. A particular emphasis is on hidden pockets where the city's urbanity and natural beauty mesh seamlessly. A slide show will accompany this presentation. Thursday, May 13

 

BingDiscover Italy

To introduce the new Lonely Planet "Discover" series, guidebook author Alison Bing will present a multimedia presentation travel in Italy. She will share trip highlights, her favorite itineraries, and practical tips. Come with your own questions and travel tales about Italy! Lonely Planet Discover books will be sold at this event. LazardExploring Paris Solo

History and travel librarian Dorothy Lazard will present a talk on exploring Paris solo. Topics will include finding and renting an apartment, etiquette, creating a flexible itinerary, and navigating the City of Lovers happily by oneself. A slideshow will accompany this presentation. CralleExplore Alaska

World traveler and photographer Trevor Cralle will share stories and tips on travel to Alaska's Inside Passage, Denali National Park, Tracy Arm Fjord, Misty Fjords, and the cities of Anchorage, Juneau, and Ketchikan. He will also present a slideshow. Bring your stories, tips, and questions. Thursday, June 3 

 
Rockin' Robins Family Play Days Start May 15
 

Rockin' Robins The Oakland Public Library is pleased to announce Rockin' Robins Family Play Days, scheduled for Saturday mornings in late May and early June at four library locations. Rockin' Robins Family Play Days offer fun, hands-on parenting workshops for parents, along with storytimes, gift giveaways, snacks, crafts, games, toys, and playtimes for children ages 0-5. All events are free.

 

As part of the program, three workshops are geared to provide helpful encouragement to parents with young children. While these programs are in session, babies, toddlers, and preschoolers will be kept entertained with a bouncy storytime, songs, games, snacks, toys, and playtime.

 

Each week will offer a different program:

Week 1: Taking Care of Yourself - Learn helpful tips and tricks to improve your life while living with babies and preschoolers.

 

Week 2: Leaping Lizards! The Joy of Music and Movement - Discover surefire ways to engage young children, encourage their creative expression, and build their self confidence through rhythm, songs, and nursery rhymes.

 

Week 3: Getting Your Kids to Do What You Want Them to Do - Explore positive discipline techniques that work, including appropriate consequences, firm boundaries, communication skills, and creating relationships.

Rockin' Robins Family Play Days will be offered at the Main Library, Eastmont Branch, Cesar Chavez Branch, and West Oakland Branch.

Montclair Branch - Doesn't Look a Day Over 30Montclair Branch Celebrates 80th Anniversary
 
Montclair Branch has planned events throughout the month, culminating with an anniversary party.
 
 

80 Years in Oakland: A Visual Survey

 

Historian, author and librarian Steve Lavoie shows historic photos of Oakland and talks about the history of our city and the man who gave the money to build the Montclair Branch back in 1930, Chauncey W. Gibson.

The Clock Without a Face - Author Presentation

 
Co-authors Eli Horowitz and Mac Barnett present a mystery inside a puzzle inside a treasure hunt inside a CROSS-COUNTRY PHENOMENON. The Clock without a Face is a lavishly illustrated book with puzzles that send readers out in the world looking for real buried treasure. This will be an evening of mystery, detection, and shoveling. Books will be available for purchase and special hints will be given out so you can get a head start on your treasure hunt.

Montclair Village: Oakland's Early Hill Town

 
Oakland Heritage Alliance member and Librarian Kathleen DiGiovanni will explore the history of Montclair and your Montclair Branch Library. This talk will cover the early development of Oakland's "hill district," Jack Hays and William Dingee, early residential development, including Fernwood, Montclair schools, and the Birthday Branch.

Montclair Branch Book Sale

 

Join the Friends of the Montclair Branch for bargains on gently used books of all kinds - fiction, cook books, children's books, nonfiction and more. Stock up for summer reading at great prices! All sales benefit the Montclair Library.

The Maltese Falcon - 80 Years of Mystery

 

On the 80th anniversary year of the publication of Dashiell Hammett's The Maltese Falcon, mystery author Mark Coggins talks about its place in the crime fiction canon and the real locations in San Francisco where the story is set. He will also discuss his latest novel, The Big Wake-Up, and the real locations in Oakland where it is set. Special thanks to the Sisters in Crime Speakers Bureau for helping organize this event.

Montclair Branch's 80th Anniversary Party

 

After the Maltese Falcon presentation all are invited to join staff and the Friends of the Montclair Branch Library in a celebration of Montclair Branch's 80th anniversary, with cake.

Piedmont Ave. Branch Honored by Archway School

On Thursday, April 15, Archway School's fourth grade students presented the Lois Foster Leadership Award to the Piedmont Avenue Branch. Created by the Woods Edge Board of Trustees, the Lois Foster Leadership Award, in the name and spirit of Archway founder Lois Foster, honors those individuals or organizations that have exhibited dedicated service and support to the Archway School Community.
