Get a Brand New Bag on Earth Day!

A bag just like this one can be yours - come to the library on Earth DayApril 22 is Earth Day. On that day, as part of the citywide Bring Your Own Bag (BYOB) campaign, the Oakland Public Library will give free canvas tote bags at all library locations. The bags are durable, attractive, and reusable. They can be used to carry books to and from the library, or for grocery shopping. Reuse over and over and help reduce the amount of waste caused by ordinary plastic and paper bags. Available while supplies last. Bags are courtesy of the Public Works Agency, Oakland Recycles and Waste Management for Alameda County.

FreeTax Help Available through April 15

taxes, taxes, taxes!Tax Day is nearly here again. If you haven't filed you 2010 Income Tax Returns yet, you still have two weeks. And you can get free help filling out your Income Tax forms at the Oakland Public Library.

Did we mention that it's free?
 
In partnership with the American Association for Retired Persons (AARP), the Library is offering free tax assistance from April 1 through Tax Day, April 15. Trained volunteers will help residents fill out their forms at the Main Library-West Auditorium, César E. Chávez Branch, Dimond Branch, Eastmont Branch, and Temescal Branch Library.

Bookmark BookstoreMark your calendar for The Bookmark Bookstore's Spring Sale. Prices are always low on the Bookmark's inventory of high quality used books, but during this four-day sale, you can save an additional 30%. All proceeds benefit the Oakland Public Library.

 

Sale pricing is offered to the public from Thursday, April 8 through Sunday, April 11, 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily. 

 

FOPL Members: Friends of the Oakland Public Library will be able to take advantage of the 30% discount before the public on Wednesday, April 7, during the Members' First Choice Sale. The shop will be open to Friends of the Oakland Public Library only on this day.

Fun Events for Kids Highlight Celebration of El Día de Los Niños/El Día de Los Libros

El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Children's Day/Book Day), known as Día, emphasizes the importance of advocating literacy for children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Of course, this is something libraries are concerned with every day, but the year-round effort culminates on April 30. The Oakland Public Library has several events planned around this annual celebration. 
 
Around the World in Story & Song
Storysong Productions presents storyteller & singer Mara in celebration of El Dia de Los ninos/El Dia de Los Libros, Children's Day/Book Day. Enjoy interactive stories and songs from many different cultures. Locations and dates are as follows:

Meet Author/Illustrator Hector Viveros Lee
Join us for a reading by the acclaimed author of If I Had a Hippopotamus, learn how books are made, and get a free children's book! Los Mapaches children's ensemble will wing songs and play musical instruments from Latin America. This event takes place at César Chávez Branch on Saturday, May 1, 3:30 pm.
