Loma Prieta: 20 Years Later

Oakland History Room Looks Back on '89 Quake
 The Cypress Freeway.
It's hard to believe 20 years have passed since Northern California was rocked by the Loma Prieta earthquake. To mark the anniversary, on Saturday, October 17, 2009, from 1 to 4 pm, the Oakland History Room presents Loma Prieta: 20 Years Later, an afternoon of memories and oral histories.

The day was significant in so many ways, generating memories both personal and of far-reaching importance. The Bay Bridge broke. The Cypress Freeway collapsed. The World Series, coincidentally pitting two local teams against each other, was delayed. Neighbors and complete strangers joined forces to cope with hardships and tragedies.

The 1989 World Series pitted the A's against the Giants. Come tell your story for an electronic video archive and hear the stories of your neighbors who endured the fateful day 20 years ago when the San Andreas fault let loose. The event promises to feature a surprise special guest. (Hint: he was wearing an Oakland A's uniform that day.)

This event will take place in the Main Library's West Auditorium.
