Summer Reading Program to
Close with Fun Finale at the Oakland Museum
"Be Creative" is the theme of this year's Summer Reading Program. It's going to be fun for the entire family when the Oakland Public Library's Summer Reading Program draws to a close on Sunday, August 9, from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m., with a party at the Oakland Museum of California. The celebration links two fantastic summer events - the Library's Summer Reading Program and the Oakland Museum of California's Family Explorations - for a double dose of culture, entertainment, fun, and learning. The celebration will take place on the grounds of the Oakland Museum of California, 1000 Oak Street. Admission is free!

Magician Timothy JamesEntertainment will include mystifying magic by Timothy James (pictured at left), a cartooning workshop with Oliver Chin, scientific experiments with the Lawrence Hall of Science, dancing on an outdoor stage, creative storytelling, and hands-on art activities. Free frozen treats will be provided (as long as supplies last) by Dreyer's. And, to give credit where it's due, the library will conduct a ceremony to honor all Summer Reading Program participants who succeeded in reading eight hours or more this summer.

The 2009 Summer Reading Program has been a popular and fun way to encourage young library patrons to "Be Creative" during the summer months. Participants have benefitted not only from the pleasure of reading, but also from a summer's worth of free events featuring puppets, magic tricks, music, wildlife, crafts, and more.

Teen Summer Passport Program Wraps Up with Big Shindig

Get one of these and see the sights. On Saturday, August 29, at 3 pm, teenagers who participated in the Teen Summer Passport Program are invited to the TeenZone for a big party. The party will celebrate the completion of the popular summer-long program with a much-anticipated raffle, tickets being drawn to determine which participants will receive a laptop computer, an iPod Nano, and a Flip camera. The event takes place at the Main Library's TeenZone, 125 14th St.

The program began on June 13 and concludes August 15. Participants age 12-18 become eligible to win prizes by visiting Bay Area cultural sites and partipating in other activities at the Library. To win a raffle ticket, teens must collect three passport stamps; each partipating teen can accumulate as many as eight raffle tickets.

The party will feature live music by the Bay Area Girls Rock Camp.

For more information about the party, please call (510) 238-7232 or 238-7234, or visit the library's Website.
