City's Budget Woes will Impact Library Services
FY 2009-2010 LIBRARY BUDGET NEWS

Oakland is stretching its dollars. As many of you know, the Mayor's proposed FY 2009-2010 budget document was made public in May and is available for viewing on the City of Oakland's Website. Because of a $83 million-plus anticipated budget deficit, the Oakland Public Library has been asked to reduce expenses that will involve the pairing of six branch libraries, which will be open either two or three days per week; and a scaling back of the remaining branch libraries from six to five days per week. The Main Library will remain open seven days per week. In addition, the bookmobile is scheduled to be eliminated from the Library's budget next fiscal year.

The smaller branches that have been proposed for pairing are: Golden Gate and Lakeview libraries; Temescal and Elmhurst libraries; Martin Luther King, Jr. and Melrose libraries.

A "Frequently Asked Questions" sheet is posted on the Oakland Public Library's Website, which can provide you with more details and background information.

The Mayor and City Council will hold one last special budget hearing today, Monday, June 1, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers, Oakland City Hall, to discuss the budget plans. Please be aware that the Council is already considering alternatives to the proposed library reductions.

At least one City Council member, Jean Quan (District 4), is planning to host a public meeting specifically to address the Library's proposed budget cuts. This meeting is currently slated for Wednesday, June 3, 7:00 p.m. at the Dimond Branch Library.

You can also e-mail your comments to the Mayor, any Council member, or to: budgetsuggestions@oaklandnet.com. The City Council must adopt a new two-year budget during its regular meetings on June 16 and June 30.

"Be Creative @ Your Library"

Summer Reading Program Kicks Off June 13
"Be Creative" is the theme of this year's Summer Reading Program. The Oakland Public Library invites Oakland's youth to "Be Creative @ Your Library" this summer. That's the theme of the 2009 Summer Reading Program, a chance for young bookworms, ages 13 and under, to read their way to great prizes starting June 13 and running though August 9, 2009. Kids, ages 13 and under, are encouraged to visit one of our branches or the Main Library's Children's Room to sign up and start reading. (Pre-readers can participate by having someone read to them.) Prizes include books and tickets to some of Oakland's hottest attractions.

The Summer Reading Program is a fun way to encourage kids to maintain their reading skills over the summer. Children may read anything they want for the program, so they can develop their own interests and a love of reading. Numerous studies have found that children who select books for themselves, and participate in reading as a leisure activity, improve their reading comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, and writing skills.

To entice young people to use Oakland's libraries, we've lined up a summer's worth of free events featuring live animals, puppet shows, storytelling, music, magic, comedy, arts and crafts, and more. For junior patrons of the Main Library, the fun begins with a Summer Reading Program Kick-Off Party on Saturday, June 13, 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. on the Children's Room patio, at the Main Library, 125 14th Street. Children will be treated to face painting, sidewalk chalk art, ice cream, a scavenger hunt, music, and creative projects by the East Bay Depot for Creative Re-Use. And, back by popular demand, kids will get an opportunity to Dunk the Librarian!

For more information about the program or to see a schedule of the many free events taking place this summer at your neighborhood library, please call (510) 238-3615, or visit the library's Website.

Teen Summer Passport Program

Library Encourages Teens to Get Out to Bay Area Hot Spots
Get one of these and see the sights. Starting June 13, the Library's Teen Summer Passport Program is sure to entice teens, ages 12 - 18, into the library and out to cultural venues around the Bay Area. The lure? A laptop computer, an iPod Nano, and a Flip camera, and other prizes. The Teen Summer Passport Program concludes August 15.

Here's how it works: Teens can pick up their Teen Summer Passport at any branch of the Oakland Public Library. They will also receive a list of recommended Bay Area Hot Spots to explore, including museums, farmers' markets, skate parks, and cemeteries. Each time a teen visits one of these cultural sights, they can get their passport stamped. In addition to visiting local attractions, teens can also collect passport stamps by reading and writing short reviews; attending library programs; producing a self-portrait for their passport (digital, photo, or drawing); or volunteering. Three passport stamps will earn a raffle ticket. Each teen can accumulate a maximum of 8 raffle tickets. The raffle party will take place at the TeenZone in the Main Library, 125 14th St. 2nd floor, on August 29, 3 - 5 p.m.  The party will feature live music by the Bay Area Girls Rock Camp.

For more information about the program, please call (510) 238-7232 or 238-7234, or visit the library's Website.

Online Book Clubs are Fun and Free through OPL Website
Looking for some good reading for the summer months? One way to get hooked on a book is to join an online book club through the Oakland Public Library's Website. Click here to sign up.

It's free and uncomplicated. Once you're on the Online Book Club Web page, just click on the categories that interest you, type in your email address, and emails will arrive daily with short excerpts of selected books.

Each email is sized to be read during a five-minute break. Over the course of a week, you can read two or three chapters, and each week a new book is featured. If a book grabs you, you'll know what to look for the next time you visit the library or a local bookstore.

Clubs include fiction, business, science fiction, nonfiction, romance, mystery, teen, thrillers, classics, and more. There's even an audio-book club. You can select as many categories as you like.

Members of the Library's online book club may also want to check out Suzanne Beecher's Dear Reader Website, where you can participate in onling forums for exchanging views on the books. Participants can become eligible for unusual prizes. (Ms. Beecher has been known to send homemade chocolate chip cookies to fellow readers.)
