Hospitalized Teens Benefit from "Operation Teen Book Drop"
A nationwide campaign to put free books donated by book publishers into the hands of recuperating teen patients will benefit Children's Hospital & Research Center Oakland, thanks to the efforts of Oakland Public Library's Teen Services Department. (In the photo, above, are Librarian Jodi Mitchell; Wendy Bloom, RN; Leyda Perez, a teen patient; and Maggie Greenblatt, teacher of the Hospital School Program.) Teen Outreach Librarian Jodi Mitchell contacted readergirlz and the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), co-sponsors of the initiative along with Guys Lit Wire, and requested that Children's Hospital Oakland be added to the list of recipients. As a result, Children's Hospital & Research Center Oakland received 600 brand new teen books in time for Support Teen Literature Day, on April 16.
The Oakland Public Library is collaborating with Children's Hospital Oakland and the Oakland Unified School District Hospital School Program to ensure that the new books get into the hands of patients and their families. "We were already working with Children's Hospital Oakland and OUSD on efforts to provide reading materials to teen patients, so when Operation TBD came along, it seemed serendipitous," commented librarian Jodi Mitchell. "Operation TBD encourages reading for pleasure and helps those hospitalized young people most in need of entertainment and inspiration." According to Wendy Bloom, RN, "We have some wonderful readers who have gone through all the titles in our collection. These new additions will be most welcome by our teen patients! We really appreciate the generosity of the publishers who donated." In its second year, Operation TBD will be distributing 8,000 young adult novels, audiobooks, and graphic novels donated by 18 publishers to pediatric hospitals across the nation. Children's Hospital Oakland is the only northern California recipient. For more information about the program, please contact Jodi Mitchell at (510) 238-7233.

Trancontinental Railroad's 140th Anniversary
May 10th Event Explores Oakland Connection to the Golden Spike
Celebrate the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad, America's most ambitious and significant 19th-century infrastructure project. Learn about Oakland's connection to this historic event on Sunday, May 10, 2:00-4:30 pm. Join local historian Dennis Evanosky, Oakland History Room librarian Kathleen DiGiovanni, Chinese-American historian Ernest Chann, and Camron-Stanford House historian Frances Rhodes, as the library celebrates the 140th anniversary of the driving of the Golden Spike at Promontory Summit, Utah, on May 10, 1869. The FREE event includes talks at the Oakland Main Library, 125 14th Street, West Auditorium, followed by a reception at the Camron-Stanford House, 1418 Lakeside Drive, just across the street from the library.
Fascinating stories about Oakland's link to this historic event include the tale of David Hewes, originator of the Golden Spike who later resided at Camron-Stanford House.
"It was his idea to create the Golden Spike which ceremonially joined the east and west sections of the Railroad and to stage the event at Promontory Summit on May 10, 1869," Rhodes tells us. "To broadcast the event to the entire nation, he had a telegraph post set up to announce the driving of the final spike the moment it occurred. It was America's very first nationwide automated media event."
Evanosky adds, "Completion of the Transcontinental Railroad helped put Oakland on the map as an industrial center. The Railroad brought people to Oakland from all over the country, many who stayed on and helped develop the city into what it is today."
Chann, Past-President of the Chinese Historical Society in America, will talk about the Chinese contribution to building the massive transportation improvement that truly opened up the West, and the Chinese 19th-century experience here.
The celebration will continue at Camron-Stanford House, and will include tours of the 1876 Victorian Italianate landmark. The Alameda County Historical Society has graciously donated a festive cake for the event. RSVP for the free reception at (510) 444-1876 or cshousersvp@yahoo.com.

Oakland History Room Presents "Filipinos in the East Bay" An illustrated lecture by members of the East Bay chapter of the Filipino American National Historical Society
The Oakland History Room welcomes the public to an illustrated lecture presented by Evangeline Canonizado Buell, Evelyn Luluquisen, and Eleanor Luis, authors of Filipinos in the East Bay. Please join us in a celebration of the East Bay's rich and diverse history on Thursday, May 14, 2009, from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m., in the West Auditorium at the Main Library, 125 14th Street. Filipinos in the East Bay is a recent addition to the "Images of America" series, published by Arcadia Press. As members of the Filipino American National Historical Society of the East Bay, the authors have recorded a community history of Filipinos who have made the East Bay their home. Buell, Luluquisen, and Luis were joined by families, community leaders, and organizations who volunteered their time to scour archives and personal collections for photos long forgotten. Through the gathering and synthesizing of individual photographs, the story of a shared journey is told. For more information, please contact the Oakland History Room at 510-238-3222, or see the Oakland Public Library's Website.
