Mayor Jerry Sanders Recognizes TKF
Here at TKF, we have been busy working with children throughout our county to Empower Kids, Save Lives and Teach Peace.  Some of our work was highlighted during a press conference held by the Mayor of San Diego.  In partnership with the City of San Diego's  Commission on Gang Prevention and Intervention, our Peace Empowerment Project (PEP) has had a stellar beginning.  Crime rates have been significantly reduced in the areas surrounding our PEP schools.  Please click on the link below for more information on the Mayor's comments.

Assembly at Burbank Elementary
Burbank Elementry Students

This March we held an assembly at Burbank Elementary speaking about the real effects of violence. TKF uses our story as well as hearing from a former gang member who has been shot and lived the prision life. He discusses how he has changed his life around and dedicated himself to helping kids choose to not make the same mistakes he did! These students get involved and ask many great questions. Then we created the canvas (pictured above) hanging in their school to help them remember the message shared. They were each able to place their handprint on this memorabilia to indicate their participation and promise to be a Peace maker in their home, school, and community. This is one of the 62 assemblies provided in 41 schools this year.

National News piece on NBC of Azim Khamisa - June 13, 2008

NBC film crew along with John Larson spent the morning with Azim Khamisa and TKF.  They came and filmed parts from two Violence Impact Forum Assemblies at Parkway Middle School in San Diego last week.  They spent the remainder of the day with Azim Khamisa and Ples Felix filming for a piece on MSNBC's  "Making a difference".  It will air Friday, June 13th on NBC as a tribute to fathers for Father's Day.  Check your local listing for the times in your area and please tell a friend!

Perkins Elementary Sing "Remember Tariq"
Burbank Elementry Students

Donna Pinto and Linda Williams teamed up to produce a new song "Remember Tariq." It was performed by the Perkins singers in honor of what would have been Tariq's 34th birthday on March 6th, 2008. Donna & Linda wrote the wonderful lyrics based on TKF's 6 key messages while Linda & Suzanne created a melody that captured the power of the song. See the proud musical talents of the Perkins TKF Singers!!! Listen to "Remember Tariq"

1st Grade Lockdown
"We had a lock down at our school one day because of a shooting just outside while my kids were on the playground. What hurts me most is that when I was that age I would have been devastated but instead I saw 6 year olds telling stories and so desensitized that no wonder 9 and 10 year olds are picking up guns and joining gangs."

Table Captains help us spread the word by inviting 10 people to join them at their table for the event. Our Table Captains do not financially sponsor a table-they just invite others to come to this inspirational one-hour event! Email or Call Suzanne@tkf.org or Katie@tkf.org for more information.
